Since I was last on XMarks (I'm one of the folks with access trouble) I've received my first box-pleated kilt, made by our own John/Slohairt of Keltoi Gaelic Clothing, and it is lovely. No, it does not swish the same way as a knife-pleated kilt, but it hangs beautifully, and is extraordinarily comfortable to wear. Fine work. I already want another.

    (Yes, I know: pics required.)

[PS - I've now danced in a box pleated kilt. Apparently it looked as fine in motion as it felt...]

By the way, this exactly is my "dream kilt", Cameron of Erracht, boxpleated, worn here by the 79th foot in 1852:

Hard to say, this one. I've only ever worn two of the above poll options: knife, and reverse kingussie (if that's indeed what a UK std is). Although some day I would love to own a double box, made by "la dame française." Oh, to have more money <sigh>.

But in terms of look, (not having worn all the above styles), I would vote for the military box pleat.

I have to vote for the reverse Kingussie, as the first seven kilts I found were six reverse Kingussie and one Kingussie, so no contest really.

As I sew my own clothes I tend to make what works well for me, and the reverse Kingussie style doesn't catch on branches and seems to stay wrapped around me, though if it does blow up it doesn't 'do a Marylin' but tends to unfold fanlike.

I voted knife pleat, but those double box pleats are quite nice!

I can't make myself vote. I've only worn Box pleat and knife pleat, and I love them both. I'm a fan of simple things, so I want to vote box pleat, as it's less material, and simpler to sew up, but I love seeing a nice knife pleat kilt.

Box pleats. Balanced, a pleasure to wear, and at half the fabric I can make two for the price of one tank.

I like the four yard box pleat for everyday wear. Matt makes a fine kilt, and Barb T. does it very well indeed also. They balance better, though when it is really cold, the knife pleats and eight yards are nice.

For everyday wear, I prefer the box. For winter weather, I switch to my heavy-weight knife pleats, though.
For sewing, I've made more knife-pleated kilts (only four box pleats so far, and only one of those handsewn). The majority of the yardage I have awaiting sewing is poly-vicose, which due to weight lends itself to being knife-pleated. Of course, there's eight-yard knife-pleated, reverse Kinguissie knife pleats, military box pleats (which start out as knife pleats), ...
