As a cub, a scout, venturer and then leader, I too learned and taught the Ashanti story as attributed to L B.P. I always thought it was also a way for scouts and scouters to establish a bond where ever they met. I also taught the scouts the symbology of the right handed clasp, which I believe came down from universal practice of raising the right hand to show there was no weapon in it. Virtually all cultures carry the sword on the left hip and draw with the right hand. (not sure what that does for left handed people)
