Jock, is this on pages with rather large photos posted?

Jock it's not only your computer, in the What is Traditional Highland dress posting mine goes extra wide after page two of the thread. As Bold Highlander said, I think the photos posted on page three are huge and they have elongated the pages of the thread from then on.

There are some others, as well. This used to be fairly common, as I recall. I have suspected one of the software enhancements that were removed on upgrade may have been something to cope with that problem.
Since I usually read on a notebook computer (rather an old one ) I notice it pretty quickly. I realize this next is purely a dream, but ...
If we were going to take manual precautions to avoid it when posting, we'd limit photos in the text to about 800 pixels across (I did say it was an old computer). It could still link to a bigger version, as I did earlier with this photo.
