I have one concern about the regions. I am afraid states like Arkansas might get over looked because the forums are swamped by the states with a larger following in that region. It probably depends on how many posts the region gets. But I could see it being a problem.
For instance what if the Southern region gets so many post daily that anything we post about Arkansas might get pushed to page 2 or 3 too quickly. This will lead to the smaller states feeling the need to use bump posts to put their events back on the front page. Either that or our meetings won't be seen by as many people.
With that said I don't really have any better suggestions. If something comes to me I will post it here, or send a PM to Steve.

You can always subscribe to the Kilt night forum with the RSS tag. if you use Thunderbird , Outlook,or Gmail they will collect the recent posts and they will be viewable on your terms.
I use this for the South Carolina, Ga, North Carolina and Tenn section of the forum. If the are all in one regional forum than i can subscribe to one and not to all anymore.
I can help you set it up if your interested. Just PM me, when the changes are all done so we only have to do it once
