Continuing the debate on the Atholl Highlanders: Macman used the expression “with colours flying and bayonets fixed”. This is the traditional wording.
Cities and towns across South Africa have granted that right to local regiments. The usual expression is that the regiment has been granted the freedom of the city.
It would be impossible for me to provide a complete list of such “freedoms” in South Africa.
Cape Town has granted it to the Cape Town Highlanders and the Cape Town Rifles (formerly the Duke of Edinburgh’s Own).
Johannesburg has granted it to the Transvaal Scottish, among others.
Durban has granted it to the Durban Light Infantry (formerly the Royal Durban Light Infantry), and both Pietermaritzburg and Ladysmith granted it to the Natal Carbineers (formerly the Royal Natal Carbineers).
Port Elizabeth has granted it to Prince Alfred’s Guard (which still bears that name, despite the 49 years since this country became a republic).
My own regiment, First City, has that status in both Grahamstown and Queenstown. I have been part of such parades in Grahamstown, but oddly although I have lived in Queenstown, I have not been part of any parade there.
The Buffalo Rifle Volunteers (formerly The Kaffrarian Rifles) have that status in East London and King William’s Town.
Returning to the Atholl Highlanders, that regiment’s colonel, John Murray, Duke of Atholl, lives in a small town in Limpopo called Haenertsburg, where he practises as a land surveyor. I visited it a few years ago. It was originally a mining town in the 19th century, and it has scarcely grown since then – a very pleasant spot to live.
Getting off that topic, my congratulations to everyone who has posted pictures. They certainly show a variety of activities in the kilt.
Regards,
Mike

Wow! Thanks all! The kilt I'm wearing in this picture is a Stillwater Thrifty in MacLaren tartan that I've used for games for a few years now. I ordered a strap kit as well from Jerry and tacked them onto this thrifty. I just prefer a strap at my hip.
I'm fortunate that there's an affordable, good quality kilt in my clan tartan. I also have a few Sportkilts that I use for games--but when it is hot and humid, I find I'm more comfortable in my Stillwater.
Thanks again!
