Did anyone mention the Ensign Ewart pub? Might be where I first had haggis.

Nobody has mentioned any of the Walking Tours that depart from the Royal Mile just by St. Giles High Kirk. Most of these give a different perspective of the city and many visit the vaults down below, where the poorest used to live and work in total darkness.
On that theme there is also Mary King's Close just up from City Chambers which is a story of how o of the closes and its inhabitants got bricked in when they became victims of a plague (no innoculation required these days).

I'm afraid that is just a fairy story dreamt up for the benefit of tourists. The reality is that they didn't bother demolishing parts of the old buildings when they built on top. Never get away with it nowadays with the way planning regulations are.
The National Museum in Chambers Street has just re-opened after extensive re-furbishment and is well worth a visit (plus it is free!) - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk...e-2329064.html
