Brings to mind a friend who wanted a motorcycle but knew his wife would not approve. So he began reading books on hang gliding, buying hang gliding magazines, and visiting hang gliding shops and bringing home brochures on hang gliders. He was very open about it, leaving the literature all around the house.
After that had soaked in with her he mentioned maybe he would be better off buying a motorcycle than a hang glider and she leaped at the chance to support him on that. So they bought the bike. She enjoyed it so much too that she bought her own.
He loves to tell the story and is still certain that if he'd started out with the motocycles she'd never have agreed. But after setting up the hang gliders to "step down" from she was easy to convince.
Yup, its manipulative - but it worked.

It's an investment...
I think the reasoning that the motorcycle was an investment opportunity sounds most plausible. Fix it up, declare your liking for it, then sell something else--something you don't like as well. Then, buy her a gift with that money.

Buy her a new helmet and give it to her as a surprise gift.
"What's this? I don't need a helmet..."
"Sure you do honey, I want to keep that beatiful face perfect as we ride our new bike..."

Easy to say when you're out of arty range!
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

This all sounds so familiar . . . especially since my wife doesn’t know that I have registered a tartan (last year she told me it was much too expensive) and ordered a bonnet!
And John, whatever happened to Çağman’s Australia kilt? The Bruce kilt looks marvellous, by the way!

Reminds me of a phrase I have often heard from some of the older gentleman in my family in regards to a similar situation; "It's easier to ask for forgiveness than permission.:

I still remember the day I came home from work -- my wife was washing dishes, and without turning around, she said, "The Harley place called and said your motorcycle was in." This was our first discussion about me getting a bike. And our last. It's been more than a decade, but I'm sure she is going to forgive me any day now.

I used to think that too. But asking for permission is over with a quick "NO". Asking for forgiveness goes on and on and on and on ..................
