Sandford, that is a wonderful portrait, thanks for adding it.

Looking at this cartoon from the standpoint of Highland dress, I really don't see anything at all from his attire that would not also be very suitable Highland daywear today in 2011, with the possible exception of the wide waist belt worn over his tweed waistcoat.

    Comments?
I note the lack of hose flashes.

I wouldn't try to analyze the tartan too closely. This is just a characature, after all. If you look at the pattern, it has an entirely different warp and weft. My feeling is that it is likely the artist's attempt to give the impression of a tartan, rather than an accurate representation of a particular tartan design.

Very good point Matt, it is rather amusing to me that anyone would think the tartan in this caricature is accurate but would question the accuracy of the tartans in the Highlanders of Scotland by Kenneth McLean.

Yes, the spats caught my eye as well!

I also couldn't help but notice that we see "flashes" being worn even in 1894. I would have expected to see more traditional garter ties or ribbons. I'll have to remember that if it ever comes up. Flashes date back to at least 1894.

Oh, and I really dig the pocketwatch chain that the Marquis of Breadalbane is wearing.

Oh, that's what it is! I kept trying to make it into extra large buttons. . .

And I also at the way his sporran has slid down beneath his "bay window"

Whee! Aye, he seems to be folding his sporran in half!

On another note, the Marquess of Tullibardine might just win the longest, hairiest sporran award that was discussed in another thread. That thing hangs down below his hose cuffs...

Re: Traditional day dress c. 1870

Now that you mention it, discounting the cartoon, sporran height in the other three seems lower than what has been shown/recommended. But we're dealing with artistic license so I won't do more than mention it
