There other vendors that are cheaper. One that Sponsors X-Marks. Stillwater Kilts have actual wool 6-8yd kilts for a really good price.
I hope I answered your question. ![Smile](http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/images/smilies/icon_smile.gif)
Yep, that answers it. I've been trying to talk myself into a Sportkilt ever since they brought back the Henderson tartan, but I've never seen a Sportkilt in person and was a little afraid that they might look "cheap" or too lightweight. If I'm going to wear my family tartan I don't want to look like I'm wearing a lightweight plaid skirt, you know? But from what you and everyone here seems to be saying, the Sportkilt is a good way to go if you can't afford wool...which I can't. Thanks!

Re: My First Kilt
As long as you don't expect a Sportkilt to be something that it's not, they're great! I'll say this...and this is my own opinion, OK?
Don't bother with "The works" Sportkilt. That's trying to make a Sportkilt into something that it's not, though I will concede that "the works" WITHOUT the elastic waistband makes a pretty decent impression.
Sportkilts are great for hitting the pub, hanging around the house, going for a hike, throwing at the Heavy Athletics at the Games and stuff like that. Half of the athletes in California wear Sportkilts. Also, Seamus at Sportkilt is perfectly willing to stitch up custom orders, if you have a piece of tartan that you really like. I've seen the Sportkilt non-tartan contemporary kilts and I'd wear those in a heartbeat.
But they're not full-on wool tanks. They're not really appropriate for the Black Tie Saint Andrews Society dinner, you know? So just keep that in mind, strap on your kilt and enjoy it. You look great. Oh and one other thing...
If you like white kilt socks, then wear white kilt socks. If you don't like white kilt socks, then don't wear white kilt socks. *there*
OK, end of "personal opinion section"!

Re: My First Kilt
Another place for afordable starter kilts would be stillwater kilts, or ,the frugal corner, neither have ever let me down.

Re: My First Kilt
Looking good, enjoy our common affliction to all things plaid! My first kilt was a SK (Sportkilt) - their All Ireland Green. Love the plaid and still want to get a heavyweight in it!

Re: My First Kilt
My first kilt was a "tank" in my family tartan but since I didn't want to wear it all the time and needed something I could wear to Highland Games, the pub, church, etc. I purchased two Stillwater kilts which now brings me to my Sportkilt purchase. I had bought a Sportkilt The Works in the U.S. Army tartan for a friend of mine who had enlisted and then found out that I'd gotten him the wrong size (too small in the waist, too short in the length). As I had served in the Army myself, I kept the kilt and ordered him one in the right size. I really like my Sportkilt and so does he. It's not something I would wear to a Burns Night or St. Andrews however, I would wear it to the games, the pub and general knocking about. It's a great starter kilt. Wear it in good health and enjoy.

Re: My First Kilt
I started with a sportkilt also. Welcome to the poor house!

Re: My First Kilt
I also started with a SportKilt. I have two and a StillWater heavyweight. The Sportkilts are great for knocking about the house and the StillWater gets the more formal jobs. Wool is addicting, you've been warned.
I've found that most relationships work best when no one wears pants.
