Re: Apron Overlap, he wants it on the left. Help!
O.K. the good reason why he wants his kilt left handed is because he has no right hand. He is a 15 year cancer survivor

Do consider velcro at the waist. I believe the Sportkilt and some contemporary kilts use it.

He only has a left hand!! Definitely make his kilt HOWEVER he wants it. Cancer has touched many people in my life. I am glad he is a survivor!!

Re: Apron Overlap, he wants it on the left. Help!
When you first posed the question, I suspected the "good reason" was that your client did not have the use of the right hand limb, nevertheless, using buckles with one hand is going to be a problem whichtever arm is damaged. For a short time I could not use my right hand due to injury. I put the kilt on, holding buckle position with my right arm, in line with my stomach. I then did up the buckle with my left hand, slid the kilt around my waist to the other buckle, did the same and slid the kilt to the correct position. I am sure the lad has overcome many challenges since his diagnosis. I still urge him to have a rethink on the the left hand side opening

So why make him overcome yet another one when it's so unnecessary? In a society that doesn't even know that the pleats go in the back, nitpicking over apron position seems just a bit daft to me.
It's all a little arbitrary too, isn't it? Just because convention dictates that the apron go a certain way! To heck with convention! I dare ANYONE to look that man in the eye, especially with his disability, and tell him he's not wearing a kilt but a ladies' skirt!

Thanks for the input and it is very doubtful that any one would say any thing to his face about the apron overlap, I was more concerned with the potential for catty ( yes I said catty) and snide comments behind his back.

I have to agree with you on this, as I stated in an earlier post I personally have 3 kilts I mad myself that open from left to right and the rest of my kilts open normally. I made said kilts like this due to the fact that I have early onset Parkinsons and I have times when my right hand is shaking so bad I am unable to wear one of my kilts that open normally or vise-versa with my left side shaking. This is also the main reason I started wearing a kilt due to having balance problems first thing in the morning, with a kilt I don't have to pick my feet up and stand on one foot. I can just put my socks and boots on and stand up and wrap the kilt around. My kilt wearing started out as a neccesity at the urging of my wife who ordered me my first kilt and over the last 3 years wearing a kilt as everyday attire I have noticed that some of my health problems have improved, I'm not loosing my balance while getting dressed. I'm also not as sensitive to to the outside temps due to the meds I am forced to take daily to keep this disease in check. In regards to a kilt being called a skirt in most cases the average person does not know the proper word to use and skirt is the first thing that comes to mind. And in my case the other kilt wearers in my area have not even noticed that I have kilts that open on the left or they just choose not to say anything.

Your memory is just fine!
Yes indeed, in my youth it was not uncommon to have this done to add extra years to a fine kilt. I can't say that I have noticed one like that recently. I honestly believe that many of you are overthinking all this and it really is not a big deal to anyone other than to the customer.

I'm sorry for the guy that lost his right hand but I just don't see how changing the side of the opening helps him? My kilts have two straps (one on each side) so whichever side the apron opens, I will still have two straps to do up! Unless, of course, you don't put a strap on the under apron.
