My wisdom teeth have yet to come in, but I have had 2 root canals with crowns. Does that count?

Re: Got my wisdom teeth removed this morning
Had mine out during my first year of college when I was 18. Didn't get the gas, had an IV that sent me off to la-la land. Woke up on my stomach about 45 minutes later with a mouth full of gauze and four less teeth. That was 36 years ago this month.
My oldest son just had his out two years ago during his first year of college. They gave him the gas. That kid was a barrel of laughs for the rest of the afternoon! Every time I said something to him, he would just laugh hysterically and uncontrollably. Kept falling out of the recliner in the living room.
I survived, he survived, and you, too will survive. Just be careful of hot liquids...don't want to be disolving those sutures. (The biggest pain is not being able to brush your teeth...assuming they still prohibit that. After about three days, you'd swear your mouth needs a haircut or a shave.) This too shall pass. Be well!

Re: Got my wisdom teeth removed this morning
My lower wisdom teeth were shallow-rooted, so as I recall, when I was 22 or 23, my dentist just numbed me up with Novocaine, took what looked like a pair of pliers, cracked the tooth and extracted the parts. The sockets healed up in a matter of days. I don't remember there even being a root canal done first.
I had to have my uppers cut out a little over 4 years ago, just 2 weeks before going to England for three weeks with the Scouts (World Scout Jamboree)! I got knocked out with a combination of a pill of some sort and some nitrous oxide. I vaguely recall walking in and sitting in the chair, then I was waking up and walking out to the car with my mother. (She drove me to & from the oral surgeon and stayed with me the rest of the day to make sure I recovered OK). I got a scrip for a few Oxycodone, but I weaned myself off them as quickly as I could. I've got a fairly high tolerance for pain, so it wasn't any big deal.
The oral surgeon also gave me a little syringe with a curved plastic tip to rinse the sockets with salt water for the first couple of weeks. He also told me to be careful how I chew & rinse while I was out of the country. No straws! The sockets took about 2 months to close up completely. Now I can barely tell they were there at all.
Meghan, I hope you have a swift recovery.
John

Re: Got my wisdom teeth removed this morning
I had all four of mine taken out 16 years ago and do not recall what meds he gave me to put me in lala land. I do remember putting up a finger, counting, after each extraction. I also recall having a Dr's knee on my chest, at one point, while he fought with one impacted tooth but not sure if I imagined that. Prior to the extraction, I took a fair dose of arnica montana (supposed to limit swelling and bruising) but the dentist looked at me cross eyed at my witch doctor medicine. Not sure if it was his skills or the arnica, but I had no swelling or external bruising.

Re: Got my wisdom teeth removed this morning
I had mine done in the UK by an "old school" dentist. He gave valium to knock you out, and his rule of thumb was to keep giving you valium until your eyes closed... Apparently if you concentrate on just keeping your eyes open you get knocked out for about 2 days...
I have no idea how much he injected, but I was 6'2" and over 200lbs and can definitely remember him starting syringe 3...
My biggest issue was the pulpy mess that the hole became and the tongue just magnetically being drawn to it...

Dale, I'm sure you're a LOT better than that. I respect the information you share and the rigorous training to which you have modestly alluded only when it was in context. Pretty impressive actually!

Hahahha I know that phrase all too well. I also know its double meaning!! My mom was living in Virginia (where I was born) for a year and picked up that phrase and never put it back down. She says "bless her/his heart" all the time and sometimes it can mean "what a dear" and sometimes it means "they are a huge idiot" hahaha.
Well this morning was not a fun morning. My medication wore off around 4am and I woke up with a bad ache in the extraction site. I got up to brush my teeth (I cant fall asleep again if I have that morning taste in my mouth. Grossest taste ever) and then I wanted to eat a little yogurt before taking the medication again. On my way downstairs to the fridge, I started getting really dizzy from lack of sugar in my system and I just remember opening up the fridge door, frantically trying to find juice, adn then my eyesite went black and I slowly lowered myself to the ground and just laid on the floor for awhile I put my feet up on the counter and let the blood come back but it wasnt fun at all. I finally got a little yogurt but it takes the medicine so bloody long to kick in so I was kept awake for almost an hour with the achey pain

uuuugh yeah they said after the first 24 hours, im not allowed to brush. I kind of cheated and just brushed my tongue a little when I woke up at 4am. I had my teeth removed at 8am so I figured I'd waited long enough. I wasnt going to be able to fall asleep again if I didnt brush. I cant stand morning breath.
