Inquiring minds, outwith the Highlands, want to know!
Self tie garters are not typically worn with the kilt in Scotland. Most wear the elasticated things with attached flashes or Post Office elastic bands with no flashes!

Nothing but the best Post office style.
Post office elastic bands are rather narrow and constrict the circulation. I prefer to make my own elastic garters (with no flashes) from inch wide elasticated fabric.
Living in Scotland, I have very rarely seen garter ties worn with the kilt other than when visiting Highland Games in the USA.

I think it was Matt at the STM that started marketing the "traditional" garter ties for use with kilts.
I'm glad he did - they are so much more comfy than elastic - at least for this olde man's circulation.
As the folks at Utillikilts say, "Form Follows Function." Or - they work so why not?
'course, out here in the boonies, 135 miles from the city, don't have to worry much about what's proper only what works and feels good.
And, its true - the ladies do ask about them. I see a lady coming towards me and I get all geared up for a kilt question and next thing you know she's squatting at my knees fondling the tassles of my garter tie and asking me what it is and telling me how neat they look....
Who ever thought that garter ties would be "Babe Bait?"

Bought "traditional garter ties" are always too long on me... I think the standard length that they come through at in Scotland would probably be just right for me, actually.
I wonder if this sittuation is at all common?
Anyone else find that 36" is a bit much?

Indeed, sir. I figured as much.
But did I read correctly that they are tied differently when used with breeks, than as we tend to do with a kilt? Namely that they are doubled around twice, when worn as we tend to?
Either way, I bet that 30-32 inches would suit many a kilt wearer very well, on this side of the pond.
If that happens to prove true, I wonder at the feasibility of making that a standard offering here, as well. I should think it wouldn't be too much of a problem.

Eh, the way I look at it- Everything else comes in different sizes... even white hose and flatcaps.
Since different gents have different sized legs, perhaps three different lengths might be a nice offering, if it did not prove overly cost prohibitive.

32" is too long for a single wrap and too short for a double wrap.
Most of mine are 36" which is perfect for me. The widest point on my calf is 18", but the area where I tie a garter is just about 15.25". So 32" leaves me with either VERY long tails or no ''tuft" showing at all (depending on a single or double wrap).
36" gives me a double-wrap and a small tail and tuft.
Just to throw ONE MORE spanner into the works - I recently received a pair of HoC that are 40".

I figured that such would be the case with some folks and 32" garters, also.
Sounds like what you're able to make happen with 36ers, is what I'd also be going for- twice around the leg, and once the cuff is turned down, only maybe an inch of fuzz peeking out.
