In another thread a discussion of a possible change to rule #12 was being discussed.

I have moved the posts dealing with that discussion here so it may continue with the full membership's participation.

I like Xmarks just the way it is with all the rules just the way they are.

I don't post nearly as much as I used to; it took me about a year to get comfortable wearing a kilt, that involved some questions. Now that I more or less know what I am doing, I do stop by daily to keep an eye on the place, but I don't have really anything substantive to add to most threads.

On a more or less daily basis I visit here, a car forum and a rule #11 forum. Plenty of drama on the other two, I think XMarks as currently constructed is a terrific resource. Folks new to kilt wearing (me anyway) really need(ed) a place to be accepted and ask stupid questions and feel like I wasn't being made fun of or made to feel less than.

Under the current rules Xmarks is a terrific place for a new kilt wearer to find easily with google, instantly belong to an international community as a respected individual and not feel like a deviant wierdo for wearing a kilt. Lots and lots of pictures of respectable people wearing kilts respectably without any (or at least very minimal) of the attention getting bravado that characterizes so much of the rest of the internet.

That's one reason I keep stopping by day after day, I can point my browser at this URL and NOT read about the upcoming election in the USA and NOT read about which Hollywood celebrity whatever. For me this a place to be accepted and talk about kilts as a normal part of a gentleman's wardrobe. I like it exactly like it is.

Could Steve get more traffic if he opened a no holds barred debate room? Probably. Could he get more advertising revenue based on his increased traffic? Probably. Would that make it easier for n00bs to look smart in their new kilts? Probably not.

As much as I hate that damn rule #11, my vote for Xmarks is to keep all 12 rules intact.

I don't think the original discussion was OT for the forum it was in. The bar does not just have kilt in the name, it also has kilts on the waitresses, and the complaints from the church concerned, inter alia, the shortness of same (the kilts, not the waitresses who were wearing them). Of course, we have some members who assert that a kilt on a woman is not a kilt, but I don't buy that. That would be another discussion, which fortunately no-one started.

As for hobbits, etc., yes that isn't kilts in the media, so belongs in another forum. That could have moved and a link added to the original thread telling anyone who cared where those posts had gone, just as was done when creating this thread. No need for drama.

I'll add my 1/50th of a dollar if I may...

One of the problems I see is that the way I read the forum is using the new posts button, it is very easy to miss the forum which something is posted in when doing this.

Does that occur with other people? I'm guessing yes... Is that a problem? In itself probably not, but it does lead to things having the possibility of going off topic quicker...

Do I have a fix for that? Nope, sorry, twas more of an observation...

The proposal is far too hazy to get serious debate or a consensus.

We know what Rule 12 is - What we don't know is what it is proposed it should be changed to.

"All the red horses should be painted blue."

    1. I hate Blue - it is far too cold
    2. Blue is too radically different
    3. Red has served us all these years - If it ain't broke, don't fix it!
    4. Can't we compromise on Orange, or Pink at a push
    5. That's not a compromise - Purple is a compromise.
    6. Orange and Pink - that's just Red by another name.
    7. Can I put a vote for Green - there's a big earth tones lobby in the membership
    8. "I see a Red horse and I want it painted Black" - Rock On Baby!
    9. Red horses were good enough for my father and they are good enough for me.
    10. Didn't the Highlanders paint their horses Blue just before the battle of Loch Piddle.
    11. Eau de nil
    12. Eau de nil - seriously?

    OR

"All the red horses should be painted a different colour."

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, YES!

But when all the red horses become white, nobody is happy.

A clear cut proposal is what we want, so we know what we are talking about.

    Regards

    Chas

Just sayin' these efforts are not in vain. Most of us have been on other boards for other interests and have seen how wild and crazy and flat out insane they can become - to the point that the subject of the board is long lost.

Its mostly peaceful here. A bit of a respite.

Worth the effort to hash it out.

Worth the effort of the mods to monitor the traffic.

Don't much like peer monitoring. When someone posts that someone else posted off track of the OP that just takes the thread even farther off track.

I think Rule #12is what makes this board the most informative kilt board on the net, and should be kept strongly maintained. I just would like to see it clarified per my questions above.

I think one of the things I have always liked about this forum (aside from it being one of the nicer and friendlier ones I've seen) is what others have mentioned -- I get bombarded about certain subjects everywhere else. It's nice to come here and see mostly kilt-related things and even if things get off topic, the really touchy topics aren't allowed.

Of course, sticking to mostly kilt-related subject matter kind of comes back and affects how I post. I really don't post as much any more, since most of my life doesn't revolve around the kilt. Even when I do try to post even remotely close to something about the kilt, I kind of feel like I'm crossing a way too off topic line, so I just don't post as much. Stinks for me in a way, but probably better for the members overall. I know I just don't read anything (kilt-related or not) that doesn't appeal to me, and some of that is that I need to spend less time online and can't read everything anyway. But if it helps keep the more important topics easily found, I guess it's important enough to maintain that rule.

Yes that happens to me. Then I remind myself the forum string is on the top of every page of every thread. I then scroll up and peek to see if it in contemporary THCD or whatever. So there is a fix in place although I don't always remember it right away.

I suggest an addition to Rule #12 in the spirit of the following:

... Exceptions to this rule will be made for the forum(s) entitled "Miscellaneous", "General", "Meander", "Ramble", (and any others deemed appropriate) as long as any/all posts observe the other Rules of X Marks.

    --------------------

In other words in select, predetermined thread(s) posters can wander to their hearts content as long as they observe all the other rules of the forum.

I hasten to point out that the acceptance, rejection, modification, derision, etc. of this suggestion will in no way affect my continued participation in this excellent forum.
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.
