This reminds me of a story I was told many years ago: a fellow told me that his Grandfather was Regimental Sergeant Major in one of the British Highland Regiments (I don't remember which) and that his Grandfather wore his clan tartan kilt on parade rather than the regimental kilt, and had special permission to do so.
I've seen more old photos of Highland soldiers than most people, and I've never come across a photo showing such.
