Brian, what do you think about a 5 yard 13 oz. kilt?

I'm not Brian, but I'll speak up 'cause I do have one, my US Army tartan one from USAK. I've found it's the made-to-measure I wear the least -- not because of the yardage but because of the fabric weight. It feels like I'm wearing gauze, and I reserve that one for very hot summer days.

I'll echo what Brian said about lower-yardage kilts feeling better balanced. You might also want to keep in mind that for the first century or so of Scottish kilt-wearing, the "standard" for the yardage used was around 4 yards.

    Thanks Dale

All really helpful information. BTW I went to the web site were you bought a few of your "historic" kilts. Very nice. As my enthusiasm for kilt wearing grows it makes me want to have a few more of them, and having this new knowledge will assure me that when I spend my money (continue to spend) on kilts it will be on quality products, that meet my needs.

    I appericeat the input.

Stan, you have a number of 8 yard kilts. Why not try a 4 or 5 harder in 16 oz with a different pleat such as box pleats. There are a couple of kilt makers on this site that would be glad to help you out.

I like that idea, and that's kind of what I've been thinking too.

Stan: Nice outfit! I really like the white shirt and hose (though many on this forum will not agree), because it emphasizes your kilt. Red or black flashes would help blend the hose with the kilt, if you care about that.

Based on what I have read, especially from Dale with whom I largely agree, I suggest that you go with a lower-yardage (4, 5, or 6 yard) kilt. I have several, along with three 8-yard kilts, and think you will find it perfectly satisfactory, ie you will like it just as much as your 8-yard kilts, but perhaps for different reasons. In any case, good luck, and post pictures for us to envy.

Hi John, and thanks for your feed back, and information. I've been considering a 4,5, or 6 yard kilt, and I've filled out an order form for a nice casual 5 yard 16 oz. kilt, from Scotsweb. I haven't it the "buy it" button yet, because I've been wandering about casual cut, or traditional.

Stan, I, for one, would say go with the traditional. You are going for the "traditional" weight material, why not go traditional all the way.

I have both an 8yd traditional, and a 5yd casual (both in 16oz Lochcarron) from Scotweb. Both are very nice. I wouldn't hesitate to buy additional kilts of either style.

I appreciate the input, and that seems to be the way that I'm leaning. But, I've been wandering if a casual kilt, and what I perceive as it's it's "less formal" look (maybe) would be more appropriate for around town kind of use.
