Also, in regards to the length of flashes or garter ties when worn with hose; you can easily see how my Chief, Sir William Alan Macpherson of Cluny and Blairgowrie, TD, is wearing garter ties with just a wee bit of the fringed ends showing. Whereas with me, you can easily see that I am wearing woolen flashes with a considerable amount of them showing. These are two clear examples of perfectly acceptable ways of wearing two different styles of garters.

We should keep in mind the context of each outfit as a whole. HRH is in smart, muted day wear, whilst our piper is in full regalia with plaid and eagle feathers. Long flashes tend to work better with all the extras dangling hither and thither, but would be rather, well, flashy with tweed jacket.
