Yes these Barbour hose are hard to find - But they have been fun hunting them - I found a pair one time - for a low price but would have been a large price to ship them to the US. so they got away again.

Some have emailed me wanting better pics of the actual colors of the hose I carry.

Here is me, taken this morning, as I happen to be wearing the Wool Rich hose with my X Marks Kilt.

And here a portion of the kilt hose rack in the shop. You can see the Tan hose, fourth from the right, on the first and second rows.

A picture worth a thousand words as they say. Here is a side-by-side comparison of Wool Rich, Pipers, and Lewis hose.
the Wool Rich have a diamond pattern to the cuff.
The Pipers have a basket weave and are designed to be folded three times. The pattern is the opposite.
And the Lewis with a cable top.

Note please that this are all the same shoe size. Pipers are the longest and thickest. The Lewis hose are the shortest in the leg but have the largest cuff.

So just what color are we talking about when we say Khaki?

Here is a shot of the Tan hose against some solid color kilt fabrics.

In the lower right is the actual USMC uniform Khaki fabric.
Above that on the right is a nice coffee colored brown.

On the left bottom is the USMC uniform Olive Drab.
And on the left top is a color most of our UK members will know as "Karky". Think WWII British battle jacket. It is actually a green/brown mix.

I hope these pics help everyone understand, just a little better, what colors we are talking about .

    Hey Benning Boy,

When you eventually become Benning Crotchety Old Man, you will find, as I have been forced to admit, that concepts of time are not so definite as they once were. I was briefly worried that my Barbour hose were actually Beretta hose, but no, they are Barbour. Unfortunately, the shipping label on the unworn pair that I have dredged up indicates I got them from Sierra Trading Post a number of years ago. It seems like yesterday. STP does not currently offer them.

When I said "Barbour makes" I should have said "Barbour ONCE made"...

The label says D133/Medium Tweed Gun Sock 80% wool 20% nylon and the color is "linen".

There are some things in my "as yet unworn" cache that predate the internet, but I am pleased to tell you the label on these hose includes the Barbour website. The website shows some knee socks in a Derby Tweed color, but I am sad to tell you ( puts on Crotchety Old Man Hat) they are not nearly so nice as the ones that I have. Mine have wide ribs and a wider turn down cuff.

Before anyone asks, my extra pair is not for sale. No. Not. Fix that Flux Capacitor and get your own.

    The UPC number is 7 25077 29309 3

take the advice for WPG. I always got a decent delivery time to my place in Gettysburg; they will use DHL. I haven't had to order too many extra pairs, because they actually me about triple shipped the last time and I wasn't charged for them (I got lucky perchance). These are my go-to hose for those undecided days-the style and colour go with any/every-thing.

McLowlife, I could be Benning Crotchety Old Man, but being a product of Benning School for Boys it seemed easier to stick with the shorter handle.

Darby socks might be acceptable. I've been so set on finding honest to gosh khaki, as we know it in the US, I haven't given other shades much thought. I do have some Brit sweaters (yes, they were actually sold as sweaters, not jumpers) in Darby. It's a nice, and fairly well standardized, hue. May have to get some matchy-matchy socks.

The quest for Khaki goes on. It's the rarest color in kilt hose, me thinks.

Benning Boy , I know what you mean . Khaki kilt hose are out there , but they aren't that common .

About three years ago I went looking and finally did find some that were close to what I call Khaki .

I was trying to match my military shirt . Best I could do .... is this something like you were looking for ?

There are many versions of Khaki , but if this is what you had in mind , I will look back and see if I can find my source .

If I were looking around today , I would order from Steve's selection . Looks like a good a choice of tan / khaki . Had I known this a few years ago I would have ordered from him .

    Cheers . Mike

    Gents,

I, of course, have to fly the flag for our 'Hodden Grey' kilt hose made exclusively for the Regiment by The House of Cheviot. Excellent quality for both kilt wear or shooting in plus fours.

A good woman is hard to find. I was telling mine last night about the pursuit of khaki socks, she picked up her tablet, and dang, if she didn't come up with these right off the bat:

    http://www.utilikilts.com/shop/knee-...ave-socks.html

They actually list the color as tan, and it appears close to what in the American military is known as khaki. Sure they're cotton, not wool, but they'd work, it seems.

A fool and his money are soon parted. There's no fool like and old fool. I'm old, I'm a fool, I think I'm about to part with a lot of money. I've placed an order with The Wizard, and WPG and Lewis are calling my name. Then there's Barbour and others.

Khaki hose are not easy to come by, but if you dig long enough, and get a little help along the way, they can be found. About the only thing I remember from Econ 101 is something called Says Law: supply creates its own demand. The first hose maker to offer a range of khaki hose, provided they take the next step and let the world know about it, is going to profit.

ETA: Just tried to order from Utiikilt using both Opera browser and IE. Both browsers warned me the Utilikilt site is not secure. To me, that makes their socks just one more bit of internet detritus.
