I also think that if some had known who the seller was then no one would have said a word.
I agree with Graham that some may have jumped to conclusions about a few of the scketchy sellers on Ebay.
Thanks for clearing things up Jerry!

This whole thread has actually peaked my interest in Stillwater Kilts! Love the look of the Black Stewart. Is that a Stillwater Black Stewart in your gallery, Alaskan Celt?

Blu, I'm planning on a Black Stewart. It's as flashy a tartan as I can get away with wearing.

Bubba, here's me thinking you and hamish are cut from the same tartan, and able to get away with wearing anything!! (smiley included to show intent)

Is Black Stewart considered an "open tartan" as the Stewart Hunting is??

What do you mean by open tartan Blu?, never heard of that, surely you don't advocate exposing oneself?

I would use "Open Tartan" to describe a district tartan or non-clan tartan used by anyone. "Braveheart", "Pride of Scotland", Black Watch", are considered "open" to one and all.

Grahan, I don't wear reds very well. Too much red makes me look rather inflated. Kind of a tartan Michelin Man.

Blu, there's no problem with the Black Stewart that I'm aware of.

Black Stewart is a true classic, and a plaid that I really like. While it isn't so common as Royal Stewart and Black Watch, I see it on a lot of items, clothing and otherwise. In fact, we seem to have recently inherited an umbrella featuring that particular tartan!
A few weeks ago, I ordered an 8 yard kilt from Bear in Black Stewart, but after really giving it some thought decided to change to Ramsay Blue (old) due to the fact that I wanted the kilt more for casual winter use and felt that Black Stewart might not be the best tartan choice to wear along with the simple shirts that I had in mind.
Regarding what is "open", if you think that you would look good in a particular tartan, I wouldn't hesitate to consider it. The history of tartans and kilts is so utterly fraught with contradiction that it is impossible to come to any solid conclusions save to realize that the Scotts and the Irish did indeed wear clothing, and that it was probably something practical.
