If you are not sure what Tartan to order, Go for Blackwatch or Black Stewart. I like the Blackwatch Tartan so much that have 2 Blackwatch kilts.

Of course, you live in a warmer area, a 4 Yard Poly/Vic Bear kilt will definately be the ticket.

    Shandy,

My welcome is added to those of my kilted brethren here.

Having read all the foregoing posts, you must be totally confused - blinded by science, as it were. My advice would be to look around you, visit all those kiltmakers' websites, send for their catalogues, do a Google 'Image' search on kilts and see the hundreds of photos that come up (for that matter, take a look at my photo album linked below where you'll see traditional kilts, breacans, Utilikilts, Amerikilts, contemporary kilts, in fact a fair cross section). When you see something YOU like, make a note of it, and then go for it. That's what I have always done. I don't believe I have ever asked for advice before making a purchase, and I have yet to be really disappointed.

Remember though, just because you like the look of something, it does not necessarily mean that it will suit you. You know what colours suit you best, what suits your personality and what you would be comfortable wearing. I have seen many kilts that I thought looked gorgeous but some aspects of the images I saw very much depended upon the wearer, and I realised that those kilts would not suit me.

You have to make up your own mind on this, Shandy. You sound as if you have done your homework, so go for it - and enjoy! You can always vary your wardrobe with your second (and later) purchases.

Being a Douglas I'm somewhat biased but check out the Douglas tartans ,the modern Douglas is a darker green than some screens will show, other screens will sometimes show the tartan to be almost black. Check em' out.

I would just like to add here that when concidering my first kilt. The only thing that seemed right for me to do was vist a kiltmaker in person, and get your measurments taken.

Kilts are expensive. So it pays to get it right. If this isn't possible get someone to measure you and do it twice to make sure that it's right.

I just can't stress this enough.

Godd luck what ever you choose

    Hi

1 As Hamish advises, look around the web (Look at all the member galleries too); you decide what should suit you look wise and go for that.

2 Don't be tight, buy the best that your budget allows.

3 Consider the accesories you may like and their cost to

4 Get the kilt made to your exact measurements (Freelander).

    Good luck

Colin, on my screen that comes across almost black. The Douglas is a lovely tartan, two shades of green, a very, very dark purple?(at least to my eyes), and the blue and white stripes. I've yet to see a picture do the tartan justice (at least not oner viewed on a computer monitor.)
