I'm at that stage right now. I had grown my hair out to just above my shoulders about 2 years ago. I always wore a baseball cap though, to avoid having to fix it. (College student) I'm growing it out again, and it's at that in-between stage where it looks like garbage, so I'm getting told that quite often too.
However, persistance is key! I figure in a few months it'll look good, so I'll cope

I've had a goatee and moustache (circle beard or goatee, whichever you prefer) since my freshman year in high school. When I was a senior I played Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof," and I stopped shaving and trimming for about 6 months, not even any trimming around the neck. It was kind of funny, because people in the audience thought that I was either from the university or had a very good fake beard (I did have the only real beard on stage.)
After the show I went back to the goatee, but a few months ago I grew a beard out again. This time it was trimmed along the jawline, not pencil thin, maybe an inch or inch and a half in width. I liked it, but it's kind of hard to shave the inside (especially with a straight razor!) Due to a botched trim a couple weeks ago, I again went back to the goatee, but I'm growing the beard out again. I just wanted to start fresh rather than wait for the mistake to go away.
I can't imagine myself without some form of facial hair.

I just don't like to shave. Right now I am fuzzy and probably don't look good from either shaved or unshaved perspective. Same reason I have long hair, it goes down to just below my shoulder blades while in a pony tail, I just don't want to cut it, not that I want to grow it out.

I've never grown my whiskers out, but I might someday. Every time I think about it, though, I recall a friend of mine who dated this very large woman who had a moustache. Yuck. Shudder.

I've had a beard for about three years now. Funny thing, my hair is dark, but my beard is ginger. Guess it's my Irish showing.
I usually keep it trimmed short, but when I'm hiking it gets very bushy!

Us uniformed civilian feds can't wear 'em either - at least you have a time limit.

This is one of the areas you and I don't agree Ham! But that's okay, I still like you!:-D
I've had long hair and a beard most of my life. Partly because it fits with my interests and profession (Harley-Davidson) but mostly because I just don't take the time to keep my hair trim and I don't like to shave. On the two or three occasions I've had to cut my hair and shave friends and family failed to recognise me, even at close range when I was talking to them! If I ever have to disappear I know exactly how to do it!

Full beard here. I haven't shaved since 1970, or thereabouts. My brother wears one too, as did our father. We used to tell people it was a congenital disease.

Grew my beard in 1996. Never looked back. For a while last year, I tried a goatee. Didn't like it. Got my full beard back.
Started growing my head hair in 1990-91. Never really got long, since I was stuck in mullet mode from then until 1999. Then, I finally grew it out, but wound up getting the top and front shorn into a rather funky looking mullet-ish haircut. Got it trimmed off in 2001, and started over. By late 2001, I had the same length in the back (upper back) and even the fringe was long enough. Finally looked right. In 2002, it did get trimmed once, but grew back out.
Next cut came in October 2003 when my sister had a mental breakdown of some sorts and said that she'd never talk to me again unless I got it clipped off. At that point, it went down to the middle of my back. Was long enough, that, even when I'd have it pulled up in a higher ponytail, it'd still get caught between my shoulders and the back of the driver's seat in my car. Went to having a 1" stub at that point.
Last year, my mother decided to hack it off after she got tired of looking at it. So far, no one has touched it, and it's about 3" shorter than it was in October 2003. Got another 8-10" to go before I'm done... :-)
Probably about time to trim the beard a little to give it some shape and to get rid of the under chin hairs. But, the head hair stays.
