Yeah, I want to also mention that my experiences with the goth/punk kids has always been positive. Rarely have I ever run across any being rude. Thoughtless perhaps, like standing in a doorway and chatting while people try to get through, but I think that was true ignorance rather than being a brat. When asked they quickly move.

I still find the irony of them looking like clones while trying to stand out hilarious.

I've always found it ironic (and somewhat hypocritical) myself that many self-proclaimed "non-conformists" expect everyone else to "conform" to their idea of "non-conformity".

    Cheers,

I had forgotten about that term.

In regard to people being rude, ehh, the 'non conformist' (goths, punks, hippies, etc) probably, per capita, have less people who are rude then the conformist types. But, people are people, there a holes everywhere ;)

Having been around the Goth scene (and it is very different from the Punk scene) for years, I can say that they certainly do not all dress alike. I agree, most will wear black as their primary color. But check the styles of clothing. Everything from blackjeans & t-shirts to more traditional clothing hearkening back to the times of Gothic poets like Lord Byron & Mary Shelley. I've been in Goth clubs wearing a black Utilikilt and was well accepted.
I will also say that, for the most part, the Goths I know well and those met in passing have been some of the most intelligent and well-read humans I've ever met. Most are also,as others have said, very polite and well mannered. One of my favorite web sites is Gothic Charm School:
    www.gothic-charm-school.com
    (Formerly Gothic Miss Manners)
The website gives lessons on proper manners that would be good for most of the people I meet on a daily basis to learn. Of course there are Goth specific rules to follow as well (Friends don't let friends dress like The Crow,as they will be laughed at in clubs).

Anyway, as to the wearing of kilts in Goth clubs, by all means wear it. I recommend solid black although a Black Stewart would do well for a tartan. Just remember for Kilt wearers and Goths alike, these are outfits not costumes to the people that wear them.

    target market

Goth and grunge will both wear kilts for various reasons.... never have known "cross-dressing" to be among them. In the grunge crowd, the kilt is in fact seen as VERY masculine. As far as the goth shop carrying only "skirts", I asked a mate of mine who manages a shop. He says it's about the market. The kids who are the target 1) do not know kilts AND 2) have limited budgets. For the company to make money, it only sells the cheapest knock offs it can find.

Oh yes Goths do cross dress.

The word Goth covers Heavymetalheads, Edwardians, the S&M+B&D types and mixed in with them are some crossdresser looking Androgynous types.

Goth covers a lot sort of a "All Others" group.

Altho I ride motorcycles and wear a lot of black leather I am not a "Biker."

It I had to place myself somewhere if would be in the "All Others" group.

True that. Goth covers beaucoup territory. What I said was I have never known them to wear KILTS as part of cross-dressing. Although most goths go for an overt sexuality in their look, be it hyper-masculine or -feminine or androgynous... I don't know too many who do what I'd call cross-dressing and have yet to see a kilt in that context. I'm the oldest of ten kids. Grew up during goth and grunge. If I haven't done it / worn it, one of the others in the brood has. It may well be out there, but I haven't seen it yet.

    **tongue firmly planted in cheek**

Oh, those guys that wear kilts. They want to be different, but they all look the same. You know, those knee socks and those stupid-looking plaids? And what's with the geeky little fanny-packs on backwards?

I think it's funny how all these middle-aged guys are trying to be SO different, and they all wind up looking the same.

I always considered those distinct groups, seperate from goths, but I can definately see how the term could be a catch all.

Crap and all this time I thought we wore them because they were comfortable. Knew I was doing something wrong. ;)
