In Scottish heraldic tradition (as well as in other parts of the British Isles), coats-of-arms belong to individuals, not to everyone with the same surname.

A "clan crest" (more correctly a "chief's crest") is the crest of the Chief of the Clan, inside a buckle and strap, and usually displayed with a motto or slogan. The crest is the very top part of a coat-of-arms, usually above the helm and wreath.

Sorry to be "nitpicky", and I hope I cause no offence, but heraldry is one of my areas of interest, and believe it or not, this was the number one question about heraldry I used to get when I worked as a genealogical librarian; "Where can I get a photo of my "family crest" for a tattoo?"

    Cheers,

    Todd,
Not at all, thank you for the info.

Mysticwolf, I too would hold off on the tattoo. Find a design that you really love ans sit on it for 6 months. If at that time you still love it go for it. I have one tattoo (covers the upper part of my arm) that I rushed into and have spent a fortune trying to repair. Of course the artist was a waste and now that I have a really good tattoo artist, I am sure I will be spending more cash to add to the old one and make it something to be very proud of. I don't have any leg tattoos, but have thought about the Rampant Lion or a clan badge. We'll see. My latest tattoo (and a very nice one at that) is in my photo album.

I am in fact already inked as well and took many years, in fact about 20 to make a decision on the first one, a Greek Cross on my right shoulder ,so I wont rush into anything
You're new ink is very nice, I like the thistle, very nice. I too have given consideration to the Lion after seeing the example posted by Pour1

There are two I would like to get... Both are the Murray Crest/Badge

As a Murray we have the choice.. I have always like the savage badge.. My brother always like the mermaid.. I plan on the savage on my right shoulder, cuz I a righty.. Thw mermaid will be on my left shoulder as a memorial to my left handed brother!

Both will be done in black with minor shading...

I wish the picture did the actually art justice. I stopped going to the shop I got my first tattoo in because they were too expensive. I went to another artist for years, and when he was decommissioned for a bit, I went back to the original shop. Why did I ever leave? They may be expensive, but the work is outstanding and worth every dime. I may have them "fix" up some of the ones I got at the other shop.

In the words of Jeff Foxworthy, "If you've ever financed a tattoo, you might be a redneck. 'Yeah Earl, just three more payments and this baby's mine.'"

I finally got a picture of my right calf tattoo that was done a few years ago. I made sure that it didn't show at all with full hose, but fully shows over scrunched socks, and running and cycling socks.
