No David, you're not alone. UKs aren't to my taste either, they just seem a bit "off" to me.

They aren't like tradionals at all; that's true, but for people who aren't necessarily into the "tradition" thing, and look at kilts as an interesting option for men's wear, they're the perfect "entry garment." Among the percentage of the population most likely to deride a kilt, namely the youth, they are at least recognized by many as a modern garment with a little "coolness" factor attached to them.
I remember wearing my chocolate Workman while walking down Main Street in Huntington Beach, Ca. on a summer Friday night - wall-to-wall people - and attracting the attention of a crowd of at least ten guys, all between 16 & 20ish. They came over en masse and I thought "uh oh, here we go," but all they had was praise and admiration, and they took all the cards I had at the time.
A UK allows someone to dip his toe in and get a feel for the kilt, and to develop the self-confidence to wear a more traditional style later. My first "outing" was to the local mall in that same UK; I was so self-conscious I nearly ran through the place! Last time I went, I wore my Weathered Lamont, and even stopped to talk to a couple of kids about wearing kilts (he was of Irish descent). I thoroughly enjoyed turning the heads that time.

Iolaus, I have nothing against them particularly and they're fine for those that like em. I'm not getting into the definition thing, I just don't care that much for the styling. I do, on the other hand, kinda like the look of FKs. I think it's more the cut of the aprons and the fact most pics I see of guys in UKs the kilts are far too long to my eye. Each to his own though, it's all a matter of personal choice and preference.

Um, David....
I'm 61, closer to 62 now and I own 14 Utilikilts and wear them all.
Maybe because they're like "Scottish Jeans" here in the dust and sand of the canyonlands...the old west you see in many of the B western movies backgrounds.
Wearing Utilikilts seems more a "fashion statement" than wearing tartan kilts in the traditional manner.

Something that hasn't been mentioned, that just rolled into my most besotted brain pan...
You can WASH Utilikilts a LOT.
I wear my UKs to work...as a therapist, so I'm sitting on them all day. Its become routine (read EASY) for me to come home, unsnap, toss the UK in the washer (gentle cycle) and make my diner.
When the washing is done I hang it up, attach weighted clips to the pleats, and let it hang dry. No ironing. Its ready to go next time I need it. Clean and with straight pleats.
Maximum time for the whole process 3-4 minutes of my time.
The UK Mockers are sort of like "Scottish Chinos."
Point is, for an aging bachelor the UKs are easy care. Like Jimmy said they're near indestructable and easy to repair.
Had a snap pop on my basil survival II this week. Was a breeze to replace. Already had replacement snaps and snap installing kit from the first bad snap a couple years ago. This was the second. Didn't need to get flustered. Just grabbed the gear and did the repalcement.
Easy care. A big plus for Utilikilts.

Yeah, we've all done that to death!
I think it's more the cut of the aprons and the fact most pics I see of guys in UKs the kilts are far too long to my eye.
I agree with you there, but that's how the sales guys like to fit you, and for Noobs, they don't know any different, so they get used to it that way. If I buy another, I'm going to go a little shorter.

Exactly. I was just pointing out that even for the traditionalist (small "t"), there is an acceptable reason for their existence.

I felt that way, but today I finally ordered 2 - a heather grey mocker, and a mossy oak camo original. My collection is becoming very deversified - wool traditionals, Amerikilts, and now Utilikilts. A kilt for any occation since I'm a full-time kiltie.
