By ignoring their taunts you clearly showed them that you are a WINNER. There are lots of sad, inadequate young men who are anxious whether they'll ever make it in life to get a decent job and a nice wife (heck I was one myself one day) and once they get into a group of three or four, safety in numbers makes them think they can act big by challenging an individual, but all they really succeed in doing is drawing attention to their own inadequacies. A slightly more mature looking and confident man is an object of envy and makes easy pickings for their taunts when they are in a group. They hope they will drag you down to their level by provoking a reaction. Really the kilt was just an excuse and there is every likelihood that you would have been taunted by them anyway even if you hadn't been kilted. I've had a couple of similar encounters when I was in my twenties, long before I was ever kilted.

You handled it well. You can't be bothered by a few. There's always a few in every crowd but you can't go it alone. You also don't want to make US national news as being the kingpin in a new kilted street gang running rampant in the streets of your City.

Just too much pressure in that type of lifestyle.

As a former boss of mine once said "sounds like those youngsters need a good 'blanket party' to set them straight."

Having quoted him, I don't really recommend it.

Good on you for handling the situation in an intelligent manner. I also believe that kilt wearers tend to be more tolerant of others whether it be dreadlocks, bright orange hair, or gaugers in their ears. Each to their own and more power to em..

    Folks,

I do hate to repeat myself. But I will try again. This incident happened MONTHS AGO!

Allow me to relate one of my very favorite stories.

Two monks were walking. They came to a muddy creek. A noble woman clad in expensive silk robes stood by regarding the water. She looked at the monks and said "most noble gentlemen. I need to cross this stream. I fear that the waters shall ruin my clothing. Can one of you assist me?" One monk, without hesitation, steped forward and picked up the lady. Gently he carried and her to the opposite bank and set her on her feet. The Lady bowed deeply to him. The monk returned her bow and waded back across the water to his companion. The two monks resumed their journey. The second monk was very bothered by what had transpired. He kept glancing at the serene face of the first monk as they travelled mile after mile. Finally he could bear it no longer. He stopped and turned to the first monk. "Brother!", he said "we are not to interact with women! It is part of of the rules of our order. You touched that woman and held her close as you carried her across the creek!" The first monk regarded his companion. He thought and replied "Brother, I left the woman at the far side of the stream. Are you still carrying her?"

    Respectfully
