    As an aside, I recall a couple years back I was unable to wear my kilt (near wardrobe malfunction ) & so I attended the kirkin' in street clothes with my tartan billed Mackay ball cap. My friend who was performing the service made a comment to "take hold of your tartan," (pause...& he looks at me) "or your ball cap".

    We regularly have a Sutherland Tartan Tam-o-Shanter on our communion table during this portion of the service. A ball cap will also work.
