No matter WHO you buy from (USAK, SWK, SK, Canada Kilts, etc), the biggest thing for you will be length... at 5'8", you'll be ROUGHLY a 20" length (if worn at your "jeans waist") or 22" length (if worn at naval). Longer kilts can be shortened by your local tailor for a charge, although many companies in the "lower price range" offer custom lengths.

You've got a good start. This is a great place to get advice on ANY kilt company you come across and there are lots of threads here comparing different companies.

Best of luck with your decision. As long as you do your homework and you know what to expect, you'll be happy with WHATEVER kilt you get.

Welcome from Virginia. I agree that Stillwaters might be just a little long for you. ut, I am just over 5'9" and I do have a couple of Stillwaters. I wear them, just a little higher than my other kilts which are 22.5 inches as opposed to rhe standard 24 inches for Stillwater kilts. They hit me just above mid knee. At your height, they are going to be pushing the below the knee no-no. I agree with the others, Getting oh the phone with Rocky and ordering a USA casual is probably your best bet, for tartan. He does have some "off the rack" stuff too. Check out this link for modern styled kilts in your size if that is what you want. Follow the measuring instructions very carefully, and maybe even call about sizing.

I've had a couple of SportKilts that I use when competing in highland games. They stand up well to regular use, and can be thrown in the washing machine. They can also be thrown over the crossbar when you snag it with your fork while tossing the sheaf but that's another story.

Thank goodness for Velcro, eh?

Welcome, from Idaho. Currently, all I have are utilikilts (denim, mocker, and workman) but I like 'em all and if you're not needing the traditional look, the denim comes close to your price range. I've worn the denim and the workman while splitting and stacking firewood, they seem to hold up well to physical activity.

Well, Lynn and I spent about two hours last night trying to decide on a tartan as I figured that would be the best place to start. I've torn between something that will match my team colors, red with black trim, or something in a blue, similar to the background on this site. I'm thinking the blue would be a little more versatile, but then again, I could probably wear about anything with a Prince of Wales or a Wallace also. I never had this much trouble deciding on the color of a car or motorcycle, let alone an article of clothing.

Well, I placed my order tonight. A Prince of Wales Tartan in a casual kilt from Rocky. It will match my rugby teams colors perfectly.

Thanks to all who've contacted me to help with my new purchase. Also thanks to all of you who've so graciously guided me through loosing my kilt virginity if you will in this thread. I will post pictures as soon as it arrives.
