. . .
Looks like his flashes on the left leg are standing out, and the apron of the kilt is shifted from both sides toward the center . . . are these not indications of a breeze?

A gentle breeze like you get coming in the door sitting still on the ground, yes.
Not like you get when the door is open and you're traveling at 180 knots... those long straps hanging off his harness would be whipping him to death!

Thanks for the explanation -- makes sense . . . . having never jumped from a plane myself . . .

No problem! I personally preferred jumping from helicopters (a lot less turbulence when you go and flying with doors open in the summer is a lot more comfy than being bottled up inside a tube with several dozen of your (sweaty) "closest friends").

One interesting thing about a lot of these old photos . . . assuming that my eyes are working correctly . . . is that most of the photos of military uniforms look like the kilt is at the top of the knee cap or slightly above, and many of the civilian photos are mid-knee or slightly longer, although on some photos it's hard to tell.
Given the rule-of-thumb which some folks use for length -- kneel on the floor and the kilt should just touch the floor . . . seems like those in the photos which come to the top of the knee wouldn't be long enough by the rule-of-thumb. In other words, the soldiers would be chastized by the 'tartan police' for improper length!

Not sure of the source, but this is a touching painting
