Not necessarily. Most peace officers know what's legal and what isn't but generally won't bother anyone who's not swinging it around and generally acting like an idiot.

Well that's to be hoped so.

I have seen instances of "arrest first and let the court sort it out later" mentality, including violations of Constitutional rights or invoking totally inapplicable legislation. A lot of laws are subject to interpretation and sometimes the definitions are not properly sorted out until the court stage.

Which was why the sgian dhubh was frequently called the sgian achlais ("armpit"/"under-arm" knife).

Do you guys have laws for how long the blade on your sgain dubh can be? I recently found out that the laws concerning personal pocket knives also apply to other personal knives, decorative or not. In the state of Mississippi, any knife carried on your person cannot be over 3.5 inches. Period. It's not the same in Tennessee. I don't know what their laws are. I think it doesn't matter as much there as long as it is truely decorative and not a samuri sword.

Again, I think that you'll find that there aren't any "Laws" but only "codes". Here in Los Angeles they have many 'codes' covering knives of most descriptions, fixed blades, folders of certain descriptions, gravity knives and the like but there are absolutely no mention of LARGE folders, figure that one out!
