Most Gorgeous Tartan

I am just sad that THIS one isn't there:

Esp. in THESE hues:

Antarctic was my number two choice. It is very nice, but I can't see myself wearing it.
Isle of Skye was number 3. Very nice, but not quite the shades of blue I'm looking for.

First choice, as the one that I think has the best colors and one that I would likely wear often, is Maple Leaf! The pictures of others' kilts all make this one goreous IMHO.

Gorgeousness is in the eye of the beholder. For me tartans are about what they represent. If they represent nothing, they have no appeal. And if they represent something, they are appealing, no matter what they look like.

I must disagree.
Here's why-> MOST of the ones listed HAVE symbolism.

Caledonia -One of the OLDEST tartans and pretty popular in the 1700s (pre-clan tartan associations) and one of the "general" tartans that means "Scotland." The name is from the LATIN name for the area, derived from the old Caledon tribe encountered by the Romans.

MacPherson Red -Clan tartan, so HAS CLAN meaning

Sackett- Personal Tartan designed BY an X Marks member FOR an X Marks member

Maple Leaf -"District tartan" for Canada, so IMMENSE meaning, if you are Canadian.

Isle of Skye -DISTRICT tartan for the island of that name

Antarctic -a fashion tartan based upon the colors of Antarctica. May or may not have ties to the continent, dependant upon its origins. Possibly, it IS a "fashion tartan." MAYBE, an actual "district tartan," if adopted by the researchers down there. On that, I MUST plead ignorance.

Holyrood -Probably the most "fashion" oriented of the batch, as there is NO real connection (that I know of) between the tartan and the Scottish ROYAL PALACE in Edinburgh.

Regardless, the POLL is asking for AESTHETICS opinion of the tartans in question. I happen to REALLY like Caledonia, with the symbolism being helpful, and Isle of Skye (which I NEVER heard of or saw before here). I HAVE a kilt in Caledonia and Isle of Skye is on my "possible future kilt" list.

Ah but if you see a gorgeous lass walking down the street holding the hand of another man it does not make her not-gorgeous, just makes things a bit more of a challenge .

These particular tartans received the most nominations. This is certainly not a scientific poll, it is merely a fun poll. It is also a chance for those to see beyond their clan tartans. Let's face it this poll does not include all the other tartans that so many find gorgeous. After all all tartans are designed to be just aesthetically pleasing otherwise all tartan would be a solid natural colour. Please see my earlier comments regarding Wheather Buccanan. The modern colours are very bright, brilliant, to me but given a hundred years and 12 tonnes of peat then that tartan brings about a different definition of brilliant. The designer of that wasn't colour blind, no to me, he was a visionary.

The tartan I have posted IS the Wilson tartan, thought by many (inc. MOST Wilsons) as the ugliest "commonly available" tartan on the market.
In fact, most Wilsons wear "Gunn."

I would have to agree with MacDougall a little on the presentation of the choices, but not for the same reason.

The Antartic Tartan was the only tartan show in "Kilt Form" and the rest were just swatches. I think to have an accurate vote you would need to post front and back pictures of actual kilts that have been made in each fabric. Some of those tartans i have never seen in the style of a kilt. I did vote for the Antartic though because i had never seen it before and it was gorgeous.

My 7 year old daughter just chose Isle of Skye, unfortunatly until she becomes a member here she can't really vote. However I shall use her to help when I bring home my IoS to her kilt banning mother .
