I really do not like white hose so yes I would say go with darker hose if you can.

It looks as if the young man is a Jr. Sea Cadet Officer, with the rank of Lieutenant.
Of course the young man is not wearing an authorized (or official) uniform of the USN. But it is respectful of the Navy, and adheres to naval traditions as regards the wearing of insignia. A Jr. Sea Cadet isn't a member of the naval forces of the United States, and as long as he is respectful of the uniform and traditions of the United States Navy, I doubt anyone could seriously object.
I know I don't.
Looking back at my original post, I realize I left something out.
I, personally, think the idea needs to be rethought because the kilt is not an authorized Naval uniform. Yes yes, he's in the Jr. Sea Cadets and not the USN. However, I HIGHLY doubt the kilt is part of the Jr. Sea Cadets' uniform either. He is, after all, wearing a uniform. I think if he's going to wear insignia, ribbons, rank etc, it needs to be as authorized, not a mish-mash simply because he wants to wear the kilt AND his uniform. I would indeed be of the same opinion were he wearing trousers that were not part of the authorized uniform (Dockers, jeans, tartan trews--whatever.) Again, it's the Jr. Sea Cadets and not the USN. But, isn't the whole idea of the cadets to prepare for actual military service? Or, to prepare for actual ROTC etc?
I simply feel it's a costume as it is. Either wear the dress version of the uniform or wear your kilt, but not a pick-and-choose of both.
Respectfully,

Respectfully,
well, what I think the guy is trying to do is show that he is a cadet and a kilt wearer, not trying to make his uniform a costume but it seems he wants to wear a kilt with it as well.

since its a topic of much debate, yes he had a sgain, (a 3 1/3 inch k-bar for a military look) and NO!!!!!!!! under no circumstances will he or I be bringing one to prom. One of my friends was expelled from school about 6 months ago for having a victornox pocket knife in the glove box of his car. My school district has a zero tolerance policy. I won't even risk a dummy one.
now that thats out of the way, Thanks for the constructive words. He just sent me that picture. he just put it all on rather quickly because he just got the kilt in the mail today and he wanted to see what it would look like. I will advise him to wear it higher and wear the hose a tad bit lower. Also, I will let him use the black leather semi-dress sporran that McMurdo sent my way. Along with that, he fits perfect into the PC waste coat I have.
He is working on getting a belt. and the hat will not be worn.

YIKES! My apology for bad advice. Times change and it's been awhile since any sort of knife was a yawner at a public school even in Texas. At lunch today, my nephew's fiance confirmed I was off the mark for my home state, too.

He has removed the cuff bands and he has put on his rank, he put it on the right side to meet the sea cadets uniform regulations.

I do realize that. However, just because you WANT TO does not mean that you SHOULD. I leave it at that. I'm really not trying to be the jerk. I'm just pointing out the obvious since the Jr. Sea Cadets are a pre-training to the USN.
Enjoy the prom.

It is worth noting that Naval officers have worn kilts with their mess jackets to the Navy ball; I think this is perfectly in keeping with that tradition. I don't think your friend should expect to ever wear a kilt with his Navy (or Marine Corps) uniform, should he choose to continue in that path, however.

No one's mentioned it yet so remember it is traditional when dancing to slide the sporran over the left hip. No need keeping unnecessary items between you and your date.
