Aside from this or that... Fashion, Fit, Comfort is supreme. Wear what you will with confidence. If you're in doubt, do like I do... ask a woman.

My Utilikilts have pockets, and Amerikilts have their own cloth sporran, so I only wear one with "Trad" type Kilts.

My desert camo FK has enough pockets (6) to carry all of my crap. My leather Rkilt has cargo pockets and will hold most of my stuff but I occasionaly supplement those with a black leather RKilt sporran (when camping it also has two retractable beer loops that can double as tool lops if needed. My custom camo Rkilt has built in front slash pockets and a MOLLE webbing system that allows me to attach any MOLLE system pouch as a sporran. For those that disagree with sporrans with contempary kilts can't argue as this kilt was designed to carry a pouch .
Kilt with "sporran"

MOLLE attachment.

Various MOLLE pouches.

That looks pretty cool Grant. It "blends" in.

That's awesome, grant. A MOLLE system is a brilliant idea for that type of kilt.

Sporrans have lots of uses other than holding things. They are great when one sits down to help hold down the kilt aprons, better than a modesty snap. Well, I don't wear UKs out of the house much and seldom wear a sporran with one; but with all my other kilts I do wear a sporran including the Buzz Kidder kilt.

Sporrans are real convenient.
I have three AKs that came with the cloth sporrans. I have a UK Basic with HUGE cargo pockets, and two home made self colour knife pleat kilts. I also own four tartan kilts. I use a day sporran with all of the above. My home made self colour kilts were made without any metal fasteners. Between the Velcro, and some home made plastic clips and straps, there is nothing for the metal detector at city hall to get excited about. I put everything in the sporran--- and leave it there. I put on any kilt and strap on the sporran and then are ready to go. By doing it this way, I do not have to worry each morning where my stuff is. Change, keys, wallet, mobile, and ID badge are with me as soon as I leave the house. I have been known to put the sporran on when I'm wearing Jeans!.
