Here in Montreal, a hand made kilt was around 1200$
I had to go to Toronto to get mine at 1/2 the cost 650$
And I didn't include the taxes...

re: expensive kilts
I bought a custom fit, four yard kilt, machine sewn kilt from a local Victoria BC Kiltmaker and I paid about $640. Comparing with other kiltmakers I think that I could have gotten a handsewn tank for close to the same price. This person charges near or over $1000 for a handsewn eight yard kilt. Unfortunately I think it was over priced. The lines never matched on the kilt and it had the "stairstep effect I've heard described somewhere.

If I bought a $1000 kilt, it better come with a coupon or something!

$1000 Kilts are not unheard of. I have a Leather kilt that cost me over $800, and My friend Rob charges $830 for a box pleat kilt. You guys are surprised that some one paid $1,000 for a kilt? I think you guys need to get out or surf more.

I have several kilts that cost me the equivalent of US$1,000 or more, one was considerably more than that amount, and I do not consider this to be a rip-off, provided the quality is there - which, with mine, it is.
Take care,
Ham.

well, you do wear them and not store them for safe keeping, right? i mean i can see why someone would pay to get top quality products but will you use your money's worth and wear it. i do not mean wear by that once in 10 years but like to church or someplace where it will look nice and be used.
its almost like these musicians who buy vintage instruments and gear and put them in frames or the ilk. they were/are ment to be played not collected and admired.
that's what i think the 1000 is sometimes wrong for a price, it can scare a guy to only wear like once and when he does wear it, he hires security guards to protect his valuables. i am not saying that you should let it be TORN but let it be WORN.

I have worn my $1000 kilt to the zoo, playing drums in a metal band, just around town and to weddings or church. It's high quality and will last, I have no fear to wear it.

When I wear my kilt out, I don't think about the price that I paid. It is pointless.

Marcel and Raphael have precisely the right attitude to this. Kilts ARE made to be worn, of course they are. All right, I have a lot of kilts in my 'Kollection' and I cannot possibly wear them all very frequently, but I DO wear all those that I am still able to get into, some more often than others. I have jackets and doublets for special occasions, but the kilts get worn for those AND for shopping expeditions, days out, walking, when Stewarding for The National Trust, holidays - you name it!
After all, I have not worn a pair of trousers for over 9 years now - it's been kilts all the way, every day (and sometimes it's three different kilts in a single 24-hour period!).
Take care,
Ham.

I never paid more than $600 (after duties and taxes) for either of my 8 yard worsted wool kilts from Scotland. I can see local shops charging $1000 though. After all they are providing a face to the name and are adding costs for their rent and overhead. Having a local shop that provides highland attire is a great thing to have, but it is not a money saving opportunity. Find an online retailer you can trust and that you can speak to in person and via email and you will very likely get an incredible product.
Either way, I would still rather pay $600 for something that is going to last past my children's lifetime than $60 for something that won't last the next 5 years. I equate it to a tattoo. My wife gives me grieve because my tattoos are usually in the 500+ range. Yeah I pay $500+ for my tattoos, but they will last as long as I do and the shoes she pays $100 for won't make it through the next year. Of course I could buy a temporary tattoo but it too won't last long and in the end becomes a waste of money. Frugal....not cheap.
