My two cents....box pleats/knife pleats.... I have both and love 'em. It' s not that one is better than the other, they're just different. I will say this, though. I don't recommend making a box pleat kilt out of lighter-weight material. Box pleats (at least single single box-pleasts) benefit greatly from some weight. So if you discover that you are happier in polyester/viscose, go with a knife-pleated kilt.
If you just HAVE to have your kilt in a tartan that's not available in polyester-viscose, and you have to have wool, then have your kiltmaker bang up a long-ish, separate liner....basically the mens equivalent of the ladies slip, for you. This is also an eminently do-able home project. Get it make 3-4 inches shorter than the kilt, itself, and made out of some "manly" material like a solid, dark color lightweight cotton.
