Not sure if they will be able to get the tartan and make it up for you at that price or not, but worth the email to ask. I do not have any personal experience with them myself, but they are clearly a supplier for pipe bands, and that recommendation is good enough for me at least to consider...
I'll certainly research that link, thanks!

Maxwell
Being a Maxwell, that's my first choice of tartan, even though it's a bit on the loud side. I have a 5 yard 16 oz. in Ancient Maxwell, and an 8 yard 16 oz. in Modern Maxwell.
I also have family connections to the Drummonds, Smiths, Buies and McDougalls. I've recently obtained a 5 yard 16 oz. Drummond of Perth, and will eventually be purchasing an 8 yard 16 oz. Ancient Smith.

It's an unappealing arrangement of loud, clashing colors. I'm sure, at one time, it was quite fashionable. I would bet that there are many who would say that it is still lovely. Not for me thanks. I prefer subdued, earthy tones like browns and greens, I own a Buchanan hunting, a black watch, a black Stewart, an acu cammo traditional, and a brown duck Utilikilt (for around the house and camping) ?

Macneil of Barra for my clan. My favorite is the Ancient Macneil of Barra.

"My" tartans, that is to say those tartans that are associated with my family somehow, are Gunn, Keith/Austin and MacGregor. I like the Gunn and Keith/Austin tartans in their modern colors, Keith especially because it's so similar to Black Watch, which I've liked for as long as I can remember. I've seen a variant of the Gunn tartan that was done in either Ancient or Weathered, I'm not sure which, but I liked that one, too. Of the MacGregor tartans, the only one I can honestly say that I really like a lot is the Red and Black. My wife, however, doesn't much care for it, so as long as she has a say in how money gets spent in our household I'll probably not have a kilt in that tartan.
My wife isn't a fan of tartan in general, having gone to Catholic school when she was younger and having been forced to wear it. She doesn't loathe Black Watch, and she is okay with Stewart Black and actually thinks that Gordon Dress is quite nice. Interestingly, she saw a picture of the MacDonald tartan and hated it, but recently when we were at the North Texas Irish Festival she pointed to a kilt hanging up in a vendor's booth and said, "I kinda like that one." It was the MacDonald tartan.
So for now I've got a kilt coming in Stewart Black (FINALLY!) and I've got my sights set on a Matt Newsome box-pleat in Keith/Austin Modern. (One little, two little, three little pennies....)

My clan tartan kilts (McIntosh) are by far the most important to me. It doesn't matter to me what my clan tartan looks like; if my clan tartan was pink and puce I'd still wear it proudly.
I also wear Hunting Stewart because I wore that in the reserves, and I have a 4 yarder in the British Columbia tartan (which is not a particularly attractive tartan to most people) because that's where I was born and live.

As a future resident of BC do you have a picture of this kilt? I've seen the tartan pattern - just never actually made into a kilt.
