I'm a mandolin player and have always loved Celtic music and have sat in on a few sessions at the local pub. Being a member of Clan Donnachaidh, I am interested in Scottish history and Heraldry. There seems to be a wealth of information on this site and I hope to learn alot.

Hi Scott,
You've probably heard this question before, but how difficult is it to learn to play the mandolin "passably"? I'm guessing it is entirely different from playing a guitar.

I think for guitar players the tough thing is how cramped the strings are and they're strung tight so it takes alittle more pressure. if you play lead or melodies on the guitar I'd think it wouldn't be to hard. The big difference is that a guitar resonates alot longer so you have to temelo on mandolin to extend a note. I'd say go for it and give it a try. An F5 mandolin has to be one of the most beautifully designed instruments.
Side note: Years ago I did a painting of the Father of Bluegrass, Bill Monroe and gave it to him at a festival in Maine. When he asked me my name and I told Scott Duncan, he said "that's Scottish isn't it? That where my people come from too." Needless to say it was one greatest moments of my life and helped me to connect with my celtic heritage.
