It's kind of hard to tell with the folks in the picture above; it's a different era and thus a different aesthetic. If one were to copy it today, he would look Victorian and thus out-of-place.

I stand by the view that a modern kilt should be somewhat "stereotypical" and thus be in a tartan (at least, if you're not constantly surrounded by kilties or are are Hollywood or royalty and thus can be a trendsetter). You want your kilt to impress them but not truly distract them. A tartan kilt is something that 99% of folks are at least familiar with in passing; a pattern like a suit uses is, wrongly or not, going to make them think you're a cross-dresser unless they already know you and are familiar with you wearing kilts.

IMHO it's easier to pull off wearing trousers with a kilt-cut Argyll style jacket, than a kilt with a long suit or sport coat. I've done this with my charcoal Braemar jacket and waistcoat, and some midnight blue trousers, when I was going to the office & then changing into a kilt.

However, I believe there is a viable compromise style.

The hem of a kilt jacket generally is 1 or 2 inches above the sleeve's hem. Your body proportions may vary, naturally! But if we cut it to the same length as the sleeve, it should be very near the kilt's fell line (where the pleat seams end). That will be 5-6 inches shorter than a normal suit coat, but a bit (2") longer than an Argyll.

Thank you to everyone for the advice. and thank you to Anne the Pleater for the suggestion of the vest alone that is a very good idea. as to the suit coat I think I am going to have to talk to a tailor and maybe work through a few variations to fine something that is a modern look but that at first glance is going to appear as a nice business suit.
    Thanks,
    jeremy

Take a look at the Wallace jacket available from W.A.C. Newsome. Modify the pocket flaps and cuffs to a modern cut and I believe you will be "in business"
