Hey Sandy, how about a picture of your goat hair sporran? It's a real smasher

I believe these are Angora. While, I'm not a big fan of some of the Craggie sporrans, I think these look very nice. Though I wish the cantle choices were a bit better. I do like the one with the "charms" (for lack of a better word) hanging from it rather than tassels. I guess you could just go without the tassels. I think I would prefer a hexagonal shaped cantle. I suppose they could build one if you had your own cantle. Has anyone dealt with Craggie before? I think a forum search is in order.

longhunter - how can you tell the difference?

    Regards

    Chas
I prefer goat to horse as well. The goat hair is normally wavy and it tends to look a lot thicker - where as horse hair is obviously finer and strandy.
I think a goat hair sporran with black horse hair tassels is a perfect combination!

It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Well, $87.00 bought someone an angora sporran with nice silver plate cantle and matching sporran chains on ebay-- of course shipping would have to be factored in, but given that the sporran was in Saint Johnsville, NY, I doubt it would have been much more $10.

So there you have it guys, an antique angora goat hair sporran for under a hundred bucks.

    It pays to shop around.

...and it wasn't me! Hopefully a fellow X Marker got it. My point in posting the reference was to highlight the fact that it isn't necessary to spend $500-$700 for a classical sporran. If you keep your eyes wide open they are out there, and often at amazingly cheap prices.

If some one here at XMTS did buy it, then don't be bashful. Like McMurdo said, we'd love to see some photos...

Thumbs up Who's Been Shearin' My Goats?

Great thread there on the horse hair sporrans. You definitely don't see them too often here in the states. Of course I don't get out to too many balls either...

One observation I thought worth mention is that there seemed to be a preference for wearing these type sporrans with the lacey collars and more Vicotorian(?) style formal wear? I thought it also seemed to fit better in most of these instances as opposed to ganged with the modern PC and bow tie etc. More or less anyway...

Really enjoyed the post and the piccies. Well done!
