So, don't think BMI is the be-all and end-all measurement. It's just the starting point to make you find out more about your percentage body fat.
I, too, have run into problems with the BMI. I'm not weightlifter or athlete, but I try to exercise. My BMI is 28.5, putting me in the upper range of "overweight" and approaching "obese." While I could stand to lose several pounds, I have been assured that I'm not nearing obesity.
When I asked my doctor about a diet, he calculated my BMI, saying that I can't go by the number on the scale alone. Looking at my BMI, he assured me that I'm fine and shouldn't be concerned, but didn't offer much else. Later I found these articles on MSN:

Basically, the idea is that you should consider your waist size when looking at your BMI. (Don't most kilt wearers know they're actual waist measurement? )
All that to say: EagleJCS is right. Take it with a grain of salt. And, dropping 10% (19 lbs) would be really nice. Count me in, too!

Ok WHY did I agree to this?!
Not one day after getting all amped up to begin the new umm... diet I get invited to a party where the ONLY thing to eat are Christmas cookies!
Then...
I wake up with what appears to be a sniffle then turns rapidly into a full-fledged cold. The kind that makes you want to sit on the couch wrapped in a blanket and eat carbohydrates. I have this fear that I'm begining to think gravy would make a good beverage.
Ugh--so I choose tea instead.
Why oh why oh why?

It is better to have started now and begin thinking about what you are eating, then waiting until after the holidays and weighing in between 5-8 lbs heavier than the 21st. You can do it, moderation and some good chicken soup with hot sauce should get you through the next few days.
YOU CAN DO IT!!!
The kilt will fit and look better!

I basically agree with this. For me at least, trying to actually lose weight over the holidays is pretty pointless. My goal this year is to not gain; it is going fairly well: as of this morning I am *** pound as compared to two weeks ago. Much better than the +5 typical of prior years. I really haven't deprived myself of anything, just went a bit easy and then refrained from the seconds and thirds.
I'm down from around 200 this time last year to 190 now (191 this AM, as noted). The goal for the coming year is to get back to my college weight of 175.

I'm a bit late on to this thread. I've been slowly losing weight that I put on after getting injured. I've got about 40lbs left to lose and then I'll be in the middle of the perfect BMI range for me.

Don't feel bad; I lost (Yipeee!) 20 lbs during my cancer treatment, returning me to my 'proper' weight of 168lbs. However, now it's climbing to 178!! The Doctor is thrilled - but I'm not! AHHHHHGH!

I'm not admitting to any weight - but I'll have a go at 6 inches off the waist in 6 months.
Mind you when I say that my waist sucks - I am being literal - I see my waist shrink and then it expands - arms and legs get thinner - but only because the waist tries so hard to maintain itself.
It loves carbohydrates - I can eat bacon and eggs and mushrooms and tomatoes for breakfast, fish with salad, roast meat and veges for dinner, plus fruit salad for dessert and lose weight - but add in anything white and I gain.

I actually had started back in October when I had to buy a couple of new pairs of those terrible four letter words and the size purchased was a bit of a shock so i hopped on the scale and and was greeted by a number in the 240's so on the regiment i went... and was nicely down to 221 when low and behold thanksgiving and a full schedule of holiday parties looming i have creeped back to to 231 so i am in for 23, my goal is a bit beyond that but having the brothers to help keep me on program will be nice.

Wether it's inches or pounds we are in this together. Truth be told, the goal of this group/challenge is to have the kilt fit better. Therefore, inches are more measurable than pounds. Good luck to you in your challenge.
