Generally, lad, ya' gets what ya' pays for.

I would note, however, that some of the less expensive (and I do NOT say cheaper!) kilts are very, very appropriate for certain uses. I'm about to acquire a poly-viscose with less yardage, to be used in situations where I wouldn't want to snag or stain my higher quality 9 yard wool kilt.

I don't see it as a "lesser" kilt, but rather as a better choice for "banging about" because it is somewhat more resistant to some kinds of damage. I've seen the samples, and frankly they look darned good... just... different.

Here is something to consider before you buy a Stillwater kilt. The pleats on the Thrifty kilt are not sewn down at the fell, so it tends to look a little like a cheerleader's skirt. Stillwater's Economy and Standard kilts do have sewn down pleats.

Also on the subject of accesories, of course I would like hose, kilt pins, sporrans, sgian dubhs, etc. etc. whats the nicest cheapest place for those?
Problem with the thriftys is that they are only made from like 4 yards of material, and the pleats aren't sewn down. You would do yourself a big favor by getting the standard. Unless you're occasionally exposed to open flame. See the thread about the man who DIED from his kilt catching fire in the General Chat section. The acrylic burns voraciously. I can attest to that from experience. The best thing you can do for yourself on a budget is to get one of Stillwater's wool heavies. I own three, and love them. They're a huge step beyond anything you'll get from SportKilt, and a good upgrade from the standards. But the standards are really a good option.

As to inexpensive, well made accessories, Sport Kilt sell some really nice ones! They have a good selection of sporrans, and has been noted, their service is excellent. I buy a fair amount of accessories from them.

    Here's another good option:

Here's another thought- if you want a good quality casual kilt, you can get one of these: http://www.amerikilt.com/kilts.php If you're not dead set on tartan, these are awesome! Again, I personally own 2, and I wear them all the time.

Be wary of Sport Kilt's accessories. Sport Kilt was my first kilt and I do like it but I ordered a sporran with it and, even as a kilt knowledge novice at the time, I could see why it was cheaper. It was junk. I returned it the same day.

Which one did you get? I've gotten nothing but decent quality items from them.

I think it was the white day sporran. It just felt cheap and fake. It was a few years ago but I remember I was really disappointed.

Yeah, they ain't great. But how much quality can one expect for $40? Really, for the price, they're not bad at all.

Well, I've posted a few times in other threads, that I was looking for something to wear during the Warrior Dash, that was durable enough to survive the event and be worn again, but also cheap enough that if it didn't survive, I wouldn't be out too much money.

I strongly looked at the Sport Kilt for this, and almost ordered one, on several occasions, but after adding for larger size, and sewn down pleats, and buckles, and fringe, etc. it was more than what I considered cheap enough to be a throw-away-if-neccessary kilt.

So, I've been reading this thread with great attention, over the past couple days, looking for someone to sway me either toward or away from the Sport Kilt, and guess what?...I just pulled the trigger on a Blackwatch Stillwater Thrifty Kilt. For this application, I don't care if it is a velcro closure, or if the pleats are not sewn down, or what the material is. I'm just happy to promote the kilt, or a kilt-like garment to the others in attendance.

Besides, I already have a tank and a Newsome box pleat already for wearing when I'm not expecting to be covered in mud, sweat, beer, and who knows whatelse.

When/where are you doing the Warrior Dash? I'll be kilted in the one in Dallas/Ft Worth a week from Sunday. Got a USAK Casual for it... I'll let you know how it endures

I'll be doing the Arizona one on May 1st. I'm more worried about how I endure...although how tough can it be if they reward you with a beeer at the end?
