A warm Scottish welcome from middle England.
If you are going to do it, do it in a kilt!

If your preference for the "ancient" color scheme is purely an aesthetic one, then so be it. But, if you are assuming that the word "ancient" has some historical significance, or means that the "ancient" tartan predates the "modern", then "it ain't necessarily so", and likely isn't. In fact I'm pretty sure the ancient color schemes were developed after the modern ones. The "ancient" color schemes were merely a marketing idea to brighten up the darker "modern" colors.
I'll let more knowledgeable members of the forum clarify and/or correct my comments, if necessary, and if they will. In the meantime ...
welcome from the mountains of New Mexico!
I changed my signature. The old one was too ridiculous.

It is my understanding that when the mills switched to synthetic dies (right around the 1900's mark) that tartan colors shifted, as natural dies tended to be brighter and more durable than the older natural dies.
The "ancient" variation on tartans is nothing more than an attempt to recreate the natural die look while still using modern synthetics.
(Which would mean that a 'weathered' tartan would have been nothing more than a faded and, uh, weathered, natural die.)
Tartan patterns do not specify an exact shade of color, so Robertson and Robertson Ancient are both still valid Robertson tartans.
"Hunting" and "Dress" tartans, on the other hand, are often something completely different. I'm not sure if the book sellers came up with that idea, or the weavers...

Welcome from Sunny Southern California! (Hah! It was overcast and drizzly yesterday morning and the sun didn't peep out until 3 in the afternoon.)
A friend of mine moved from here to the Lexington area a few years ago and is now playing with the Kentucky United Pipes and Drums which wear lovely kilts in the Kentucky tartan.
You might check out the photos on their website.
I'm a trad kilt guy and I myself would bypass the casual kilt thing and go right for a traditional tartan handsewn kilt. A trad kilt looks great anywhere, at a formal event or with t-shirt and tennis shoes.
