Re: Census poll: What is your cultural / historical connection to the kilt?

Both my parents were Highland Scots and they both had several "foreign" ancestors. I was born-----a little ahead of schedule----- in Cheltenham England. I am just carrying on the traditions of several generations of kilt wearing.

Purebred American for the last 14 generations from the paternal lineage standpoint--before that Northern English and southern Scottish dating back to the Norman Conquest, when the first person with my last name (Ricardus Forrestarius---Latin for Richard the Forrester; Foster is a later derivation of Forrester) originated and came over from Flanders and settled with the Normans. Of course I also have multiple other nationalities coursing thorugh my veins, including German, English, Italian, French that we at least know of.

First and only (unless you count my yougest son) kilt wearer in my family, that we know of, since the middle ages, if even then (border clans probably did not wear the kilt).

Re: Census poll: What is your cultural / historical connection to the kilt?

I always thought my heritage on my father's side of the family was Irish (County Tyrone), but several years ago, I discovered they are actually Ulster Scots. On my mother's side of the family, they are Gordons. So I guess my connection to the kilt is Scots/Irish/Scot

Re: Census poll: What is your cultural / historical connection to the kilt?

My surname is solidly English (Dunham), but my mother's maiden name was Kilpatrick. So I voted that I have a direct family connection. After some digging into ancestry, I traced my maternal Kilpatrick line back to the early 1700s when my Kilpatrick ancestor came over from Northern Ireland. So that makes us Ulster Scots. I'm still trying to trace the family history further back than that. I also found a MacGillivray in my family line, but it's 8 generations back. That's a little too diluted for me to claim any connection to the MacGillivray clan (although she was apparently the daughter of the chief).

But every other line I trace in the family seems to be purely English and Irish names. Womble, Emerson, Johnston, Finnie, Wiggs, Doughty, Clark, Smith, etc.

My great grandfather was Scottish, and Knight Bachelor; all the Ross men have been kilt wearing folks since before anyone can remember. Seemed like wearing a kilt was the thing to do, so I did.

...that's pretty much the whole story.

EDIT: Save the part where I have more Scot in the various other parts of my family than anything else, also; clan Ross is where it's at for me, so I've never become a "clan collector".

I too am German on both sides of the family (or if you really want to be technical about it, Swiss on my mother's side from back in the 1400's) and this is my reason for kilt wearing as well.

Both of my great grandparents on my father side came from Ireland. My great grandfather on my mothers side came from Ireland as well, left Ireland for Scotland lived there and met my great grandmother. So my grandfather on my mothers side married, left scotland came in through canada and into America.

I usually say Spanish when asked "are you Scottish", messes with people. So to explain, Mom's family move to New Mexico around 1612, technically 3/8 Hispanic, 1/8 Tiwa from mom’s side and 3/8 Diaspora and UK immigrant and 1/8 Cado on the patrilineal.
In total from GG parents down:
    Cado
Scots and Hillbilly - Murry, McLeod, Hudson
    Southern - Lee, Derry-Berry
    Southern – Pierce
    This is Appalachian and Ozark

    Tiwa
    Spanish - Hernandez
    Spanish - Garza
    Spanish – Garcia
    This line is New Mexican
