Re: "Western" Style with Contemporary Kilts

An additional note: I have two buckles I wear with belts and my kilts - one is an oval with a "celtic" knot design and zoomorphic dogs and the other is a silver Zuni buckle my mother bought when I was but a gleam in my parents' eyes in Montana in the 1950s. Both work.

The Australian slouch hat style at least has some history with Highland Military history, there have been several photos in the "Show us your Vintage Kilts thread" As for the Western Ten Gallon style Shiiiiish

Sounds like it. I did mainly have in mind the contemporary kilts, but thought members may have tried things with tartan kilts, and might not have pictures with non-tartan.
I suppose I should have worded it more precisely.

Yep, that sums it up for me also.
I wear cowboy boots and jeans when the occasion calls, hell, I wear boots with a suit, and even with a tux. But, regardless of geographical and cultural considerations, I wouldn't wear them with shorts (if I owned any shorts) and I ain't gonna wear them with a kilt. I see folks sporting cowboy hats at highland games, and I'm OK with that, because the sun can kill you in Texas. But I hope the boots and kilt hose guys are going for laughs because that's what they seem to elicit from most folks. Wanna wear your kilt and be a proud Texan? Wear the state tartan, that's what I do!

You said cowboy boots, and I understand. How do you feel about the low cut boots? Not cowboy boots, that is.

I know lots of guys wear hiking /chuka, etc.. boots with 'casual' kiltwear. That's cool, but personally I don't find those boots all that comfortable, so for each his own. Otherwise I'd guess my rule of thumb would be if I don't think a footwear selection would look OK with shorts, I likely wouldn't sport them with a kilt.

    This is just wrong people.
If I wore a cowboy hat, western shirt, bolo tie, and cowboy boots with a pair of MC Hammer parachute pants, everyone would say how ridiculous they were together. Wearing them with a kilt is the same thing... IMHO

While I haven't tried it with my tartan yet, my packer boots look real good with a Utilikilt. I can't think of a reason that they wouldn't work with a trad kilt. For those who may not know what packers are they are lace-up western boots frequently worn by ranchers. You don't see them so much on drug store cowboys.

No... if you wore that, everyone would say:
    Y'all can't touch this!
