The belt actually tends to push the waistcoat out and mess up the look. Believe me, I've tried it, and it just doesn't look good.

I've got to agree with the Mistress and Master of all things kilt and go with the top of the knee. More manly or something like that. That and my short little legs need all the help they can get.

    ??????

It is obvious that you haven't visited a pool or beach on this side of the pond lately.

no Martin is right... well with a bit of exaggeration and in thinking of males. nearly every year i get dragged to my parent's beach time share, plus i used to be on a swim-team, and i was recently at a water park at Disney World; and i am surprised at how long the male bathing-suit (or shorts) are getting. i remember when swim-trunks were just that trunks they had a one or two inch inseam. if the trend keeps going these "board shorts" are gonna become capris. it was interesting at Disney World to see the mix of international vacationing males in swim wear. the natives had long shorts for swimming, and the non-natives had on speedos.

but to get back on topic, my belt and buckle (both of them) are very flush to my person. they've never pushed out any part of the PC jackets i've worn. in my humble (and possibly ignorant) opinion i think it looks odd to see a kilt without a belt and buckle regardless of jacket or not. further, the PC jacket reveals that part of the person so well, that a buckle should be there.

EDIT: oh and i do prefer my kilts to end slightly above mid-knee.

"Must" and "should" come across as strong words when opinions are involved. These are fashion decisions, not laws (except when enforced by . . . you know it . . . THE KILT POLICE)

Yeah, I never get tired of that one.

The bottom edge of the jacket (except in the tail and in the points) rides right at the waist line (i.e., the center of the buckle). A kilt belt centers at the waist and extends above and below the waist line by an inch or more. That means that half the belt shows below the bottom of the jacket at the sides, which ruins the nice clean look of the kilt, the jacket tail, and the side of the jacket meeting the kilt. If the jacket hid the belt entirely except at the front where the buckle shows, it would look fine, but even a perfectly-fitting PC won't extend to the bottom of a properly worn belt.

Turpin - thanks for the vote on the avatar!

    Cheers,

    Barb

    Interesting thread

I once heard a radio call in show on the topic of how to make the "perfect" cup of tea.
As you might expect, many English people called in and intoned that "The Correct" way to make tea was to...

In one hour, I never heard agreement on the correct way to make tea. Every one of the callers had a different method.

I concluded that the "Correct" way to make tea is to do so the way you like.

I suggest that it is the same way with Kilts.

The next time someone tells you you're doing it wrong, ask them why they aren't wearing their kilt. Dollars to doughnuts, they don't even own one.

    Cheers
    Rick
