Great kilts at www.21centurykilts.com
I just ordered two, quite expensive but hugely individual and unique. Removable pockets, front and back. Bespoke edging and contemporary tweeds. I also ordered two waistcoats and a jacket.
Quality means meeting the purpose and the purpose of a starter kilt is get used to kilt wearing, which means, until you ain't hooked it would be a waste of money to begin with the 99$+ price range. The ultra-cheapo isn't the way to go but Utilikilts "molding in the closet" of hipsters who were inclined to jump on the band-waggon either.

Contemporary tweed kilts with removable pockets? Except for the bespoke thing, it sounds like Skilts to me. I wonder what makes them so unpopular compared to Utilikilts. The lack of options like custom kilts, tartan, adjustability and removable cargo pockets + the credit card obsession let me have chosen a Skilt over a Utilikilt. $100 clearance sale for a Moker would habe been a great opportunity but I am not obsessed with credit cards, ain't got one. I ended up with 120 quid + flat rate shipping for a clearance sale bargain. Both sales are about 50% discount.
A little assumption, the forum has got an American-Canadian overhead and the exchange rate is unfavourable due to undead fiat currencies like US$ and Canadian $ + duty and tax ruin the price tag, so that Utilikilts are held in higher esteem. Let alone that you'd get the equivalent of an semi-traditional for the import price.
