Strathmore makes most of their tartans stock as a roughly 13 oz per yard double width wool in what they call their W60 line, but will also on request do most of them in heavier weight W100 which is roughly 15-16 oz per DW yard. My Forrester Modern kilt is the 13 oz and my Forrester Hunting is the 15-16 oz material. They have rich colors, a fine finish, and an excellent true kilting selvedge. The 13 oz is quality comparable with House of Edgar or Lochcarron or Dalgleish of similar weight, and the 15-16 oz is quality comparable to Lochcarron or Dalgleish of similar weight, and a bit nicer and less coarse than Marton Mills Jura and HoE Nevis. I could not say enough about Strathmore's quality and service.
I got lucky with my Forrester Hunting tartan as I ordered stock W60 13 oz, but was sent the heavyweight W100 15-16 oz instead as it was available in stock (pretty unusual and rare) when I ordered while they were out of 13 oz, at the price of the 13 oz. As a Forrester clan society member I have probably seen as many Forrester tartan apparel items as anybody and i have never come across the heavyweight Forrester tartan anywhere else. Timing can be everything.
Good luck with your search.
