Sometimes "wear what you have" is apropos. All depends on the wealth and lengths one will go. :-)
James, I've been reading this thread with interest and it reminds me of my own journey (not over yet) and the many ways I tried to work with what I had to make my kilt more dressed up.
My wife and I (me in a suit and tie) had been attending a local Burns Supper for a couple of years so, after acquiring my first kilt, a saffron Amerikilt, I was determined to attend the next one in my kilt (all be it a utility style kilt). I had not yet discovered X Marks so, I suited up my kilt... Shirt, tie, black Kashmir sports coat (standard, not kilt), matching saffron canvas clip on sporran (all I had) along with black hose, black brogues and sgian dubh. My wife loved it but, amongst the tartan/Prince Charlie group (all the other kilted there), I must have looked quite strange. I was experimenting and trying to dress up my kilt, despite how crude I must have looked but, I was kilted and happy just the same (kind of an ignorant bliss).
You, my friend, are doing quite well. Your ensemble looks great and you're going in basically the right direction with it. Luckily, you have XMTS, and there has certainly been some excellent advice given in this thread. Some of that advice is 'how' which can be adopted immediately but, some of the advice is 'what' and that may take some time so, be patient.
I think you look great. I'm new to this so please take this lightly, but I wouldn't get too hung up on the coat and its length. The ensemble looks great together.
