On second thought, I'll add my contemporary taste to this thread for posterity as well even though you may have seen these photos in other threads.

I prefer the term "colour coordinated" to "matchy matchy" ;) I'm not obsessed about matching, but if you've got the threads anyway, you might as well look pulled together. There's a place for colour coordination AND contrast in this man's aesthetic.

Recent visit of HRH Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. Lovat green day tweed with matching hose, red garter ties, tattersall shirt, club tie, contrasting burgundy wool waistcoat, antique pocket watch, Clanranald tank, simple black sporran and brogues.

A change from the Prince Charlie which has earned its keep well. My velvet doublet, white Highland cravat, diced hose and buckled slip ons.

Note: I'm not in love with either of these sporrans I currently own. I've got my eye out for a nice old brown leather with good patina and something more classic, perhaps in grey seal for the evening. I also want some hunting sporrans so the evolution will continue!

I love horsehair sporrans. I think its a shame they seem to be reserved to military and piper folk nowadays. They're sharp!

Love the red kilt and waistcoat combo. It's bold but very smart. Might not work as well in every tartan with the waist coat tartan not cut on the bias, but in that one, it really works.

Also, my brother sure looks sharp in that last photo...Love the soft leather hunting sporran, hose and custom woven clanranald colours.
I thought that the first pic of me in the DREADED WHITE HOSE with a kilt in a clan tartan not my own was bad enough

Horsehair sporrans are indeed awesome. Totally over the top for civilian attire, but by the very nature of that boldness, wonderful.

The MacQuarrie tartan kilt and waistcoat is certainly visually arresting and whoever made it did a good job of matching the sett between them. Bias cut tartan waistcoats add another dimension of interest, but considering I got the whole set very inexpensively from an estate sale posted on eBay, I can't really complain.

I agree that colour coordination and contrast both have their place. Sometimes the nature of a forum like this can put too much emphasis on things, one way or another, and I also agree it is best not to obsess.

If you are wanting a hunting sporran, you would do well to convince your brother to lend you his... indefinitely

I hear ya! There are plenty of ecru hose in my early Prince Charlie pics. I'm still of the rather controversial opinion that if you can't afford diced or matching Argyll hose, white or black hose are preferable for evening wear to say lovat or bottle green hose. These colours just scream day wear to me. For formal wear, diced or Argyll are the way to go for sure but when it comes to the undyed hose, I'm in the "relax! they're just another colour of hose" camp... but I digress... everyone has aired their views on THAT subject and I don't want to hijack the thread I started and take it down the old white hose road...

I will say that there is an elitist air among our community that wants to make sure people know they own their kit and didn't visit a hire shop last night. For this reason, I think no matter what the rental industry did to attire their clientele, many xmarkers would move away from it, opting for more obviously bespoke/specialty items. In other words, ubiquitousness, if that is indeed a word, is the enemy of the sartorial snob. Always has been, always will be... ;)

Ha! There are a lot of miles between Vancouver and Toronto so it's not easy to just borrow an item from big brosie. But if I was helping myself to his kit, I wouldn't stop at one sporran. X has a fantastic Highland wardrobe!

OK, I managed to dig up some pics of the first time I wore the kilt (Jr. High Grad)... but they are actually photos of photos, because I used the image as a label for my home brewing. You can also see my old Karelian bear-dog in the pic.

I wanted to drop a note and say what a great job you did on the tartan design.

Whereas I, on the other hand, appear to be flirting with queasy. I swear this ensemble looked okay at home.

Oh, I don't know about queasy... I think you looked pretty sharp.
