Certainly XMTS has influenced my kilt wearing; being here assured that there are many other men out there appreciating wearing of the kilt.
However, the first forum or message board - as I think it was called back in the nineties - important to me was Tom’s Café, run by the late Tom Manuel. True, it wasn’t just about kilts, but in those days it was a great forum, on which among others Hamish, “the legend”, was a frequent contributor. Then came around 2000 WDP’s Bravehearts’ forum. Once a big one, but after the introduction of XMTS in 2004, I like many others, preferred XMTS. As you probably know, there is absolutely no activity any longer on the WDP Forum.

I'm more on the trad side of things, but I should also give a shout out to Alan H (the father of the X-Kilt) for his "kilt up and give'r!" approach, especially when it comes time for less traditional attire.
In terms of images, I'm feeling the Duke of Edinburgh (Prince Philip), who is #26 on GQ's list of the 50 best dressed men in Britain for 2014 (see also the Huffington Post commentary, which mentions the kilt). He's always well turned out in his Highland attire and has a remarkable ability to mix neutrals (greys, lovats, muted colours) and subtle patterns. Very traditional, but definitely "less is more." He's often seen with a brown leather day sporran and black shoes, which I'm going to be trying out because my lass got me an unworn, plain, brown, MoD sporran for Xmas. He also goes for more stripped down Highland jackets and seems to enjoy wearing a few different tartans.
Huffpost. Notice the subtle pattern on his jacket/waistcoat and plain hose. He's also rocking a decent size knot on his repp tie.

JAMD. Sweater (jumper) under tweed for a more relaxed look.

Dailymail. No tie or jacket for a casual---but still smart!---kilted look with a sweater.

Argenta Images. Formal kit in a Balmoral doublet, which doesn't require a jabot. I got my hands on a Balmoral, but it was a pinch too small and I sold it to Nathan

The Duke of Edinburgh's son, the Duke of Rothesay (Prince Charles), is a chip off the old sartorial block. He does, of course, have his own personal take on THCD, which is still "less is more" but with perhaps a bit more panache in his choice of daywear sporran, hose, and pocket square than his father.
Here they are kilted together at a full formal function. I like the clean lines of their jackets and have a civilian mess jacket to emulate the look. (from creagdhubh's Photobucket)

Did Rothesay perhaps inherit Edinburgh's Balmoral or do they both have one?

I like the darker colour of his tweed jacket here, though I can't seem to get into patterned hose tops. I have a hunting sporran too, but it is black instead of brown and I wear it on a strap instead of a chain.

I must admit, after seeing the Balmoral doublet, the one Nathan wears, I'm in the process of saving up for one from Rocky. Probably a bottle green or navy blue velvet.

This forum has shaped my thoughts on THCD. Before I stumbled onto XMTS, I was blissfully ignorant of kilted attire.
One day I was cruising the web looking for something completely unrelated to kilts, and lo and behold, XMTS popped up on my search engine (funny how that seems to happen.) So, naturally being curious, I clicked on the link. After a few minutes of searching the forum (well actually more like an hour) the scales fell from my eyes,….and I realized I had found one of the fabled sartorial nirvanas.
As I read the words of wisdom from XMTS’ kilted apostles,….Jock Scot, Panache, MacMillan of Rathdown, McMurdo, Riverkilt, Alan H, and others, I quickly realized I knew nothing about kilted attire. I thought, I had it all covered, a black Argyll jacket for business and any dinner/theater dates, a Jacobite shirt for the pub, and of course the ubiquitous PC with ghillies for formal events.
Now, after five years of being a part of this community, I can say, if I had found the forum before purchasing my first kilt, I would have saved money and spared myself frustration. There are, however, still a few things I would like to pick up, another jacket and a few accessories.
Speaking of accessories, I had mentioned to my wife I like the way Zardoz accessorizes. She looked at me and made it clear,……I may not have a girltorage (sometimes you just can’t have everything you want. )

Well I never really thought about an "influence" other than the way my dad dressed at the Portland OR Highland games and the fantastic uniforms of the pipers and drum majors wore back then. Anyone notice how pipe band uniforms seem to have become more casual these days.

Check out HRH's ghillie brogues. There are a few more pairs in the photo as well.
