My first kilt was a 5.11 TDK in Multicam. I had always wanted to try a kilt, it was affordable, and the Multicam was a perfect way to compensate for my insecurity in wearing it. Shortly thereafter I picked up a couple of Stumptown kilts. Then this year for my birthday, my wife got me a Casual Kilt from USA Kilts. For that it was just a matter of finding a tartan I liked and rolling with it, I chose Holyrood. Since then I've more-or-less been sucked down the bottomless abyss that is traditional kilting. If I had it to do again, I'd dive in straight to traditional kilting, because of how much I love it. But it's great having a couple of real beater kilts about, and they still hold a fond place in my heart as part of my journey.

As a fellow Laphroaigh enthusiast I certainly applaud your thoughts on wearing a tartan from the area (on a side note I just managed to score 3 bottles of discontinued 18 year old in a very unlikely place) Personally I have a number of different tartans I wear because up until recently I thought I did not have a clan so I have 3 utility kilts 2 tartan kilts one in freedom and one in pride of Scotland and 2 hybrid kilts one in royal stewart and one in pride of Scotland as well as one on order in my wifes tartan (Thomson) and I am going to order one in my newly discovered family of Gordon so yes I do have quite a number of kilts however each has it's purpose. I am actually considering wearing one moose hunting this fall. So I say choose what you feel is this most important to you and just go with it

I spent a good bit of time trying to decide what tartan I wanted as well. But in the end I chose the US Army tartan. After 20 years of service, they are truly my clan.

With the tartan of kilts, of course some Clans have several tartans, and a Mr Stewart could have a closet-full of the things, all different, with a Mr MacDonald not far behind.
That’s kind of me, MacDonald is my clan. I picked MacDonald of the isles hunting ancient colours (Marton Mills). Didn’t want/like the modern MacDonald that my father wears. This was before I understood the difference between modern ancient and weathered tartans or that different mills use threads in different shades. With that understanding my next kilt was the MacDonald clan tartan in ancient colours (my preferred colour palette) from House of Edgar. This is now my preferred kilt and I rarely wear the hunting one.
I too am a Laphroaig fan, if you’d been a talisker man I would tell you Isle of Skye tartan job done universal tartan beautiful and easily available.
What ever you pick check how many different colour palettes and mills that the tartan is available in and pick what you like best.
    Good luck

For my first kilt, I decided to get our Lynch family tartan. Apparently I had 3 different tartan patterns to choose from so will most likely get the other 2 at some point. I can seriously see this as becoming an addiction... :P

My first kilt was a brown AmeriKilt, which I gave to my best friend when I outgrew it. Unfortunately it still had my XMarks badge on it as a kilt pin, so at least he’s wearing it in style!

In late 2016, I ordered my first tartan kilt from Wm. Glen and Son in San Francisco, an eight (or more) yard kilt in MacKenzie Ancient. My father’s side of the family hail from the Black Isle near Inverness, in MacKenzie country. I really prefer the softer lovat green and blue coloring to the mostly navy modern colors.

My next kilt, I expect, will be another eight-yarder in the MacColl Ancient tartan of my mother’s clan. That tartan is a soft, but fairly vivid orange with lovat blue and green in the pattern.

I chose a UT Kilts Ultimate Utility Kilt in olive green. I bought it after watching several videos online. I also thought that it was inexpensive enough that it would be a great way to try out wearing a kilt without breaking the bank. I also liked the look of utility kilts in general. They seemed laid back. I think it fits my personality well. Besides, I work as a n art teacher and pottery instructor. A formal wool kilt would get ruined if I splatter some paint or ceramic glaze on the fabric. I wear the kilt often. It is my only kilt at the moment. I am shopping for my second kilt currently.

The more I drink Laphroaigh the bigger fan I become and the more I want to explore other Islays. You have quite the collection of kilts. I think I'm going to take your advice and go with what feels right.

First was a Utilikilts mocker...the very next day a Utilikilts traditional.
    Next was a Stillwater Lamont.
Next was a 3-4 kilt run with NeoKilts
Next was my tank. A 16 ounce hand sewn by Cathy Lare.
All the following kilts were originated through Celtic Croft.
There is one Paul Henry in this mix, purchased from a friend.
I'm really unsure to the grand total at the moment....though if you care to look, my kilt history is up to date.
