As many have pointed out I don't plann on ever sitting in a Scottish pub shirtless, but if tattoos come up in conversation almost every time people ask to see.
At which point you are free to say "I'm sorry, it's under my clothing." Or "I'm sorry, it's very personal." Just because someone asks, you are not obligated to show. Especially if doing so would expose parts of your body not usually open to public perusal (or, that you usually prefer not to be open to public perusal), or a piece that is there for personal significance rather than to show off to others. (Though, by talking about it, people will still know what it's of, so if you're concerned about other people's reactions, it probably also shouldn't come up in discussion.)
